COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A strong Belgian brown ale.
After extensive tasting, trying to fulfil increasingly strict requirements, the brewmaster obtains a creamy, dark Belgian brown ale: Kasteelbier. The quality of the past is still unmatched and the beloved taste is very much of the present. Kasteelbier is a dark, artisanal beer, soft and mild, full and creamy. It can age for many, many years, as indicated on the bottle. 11% abv, serve at 12°C (54°F) (Translation by Martinus)

Dark mahoghany coloured with a pretty head on top. Has a very sweet aroma. Some spices notabel. In the flavour there is almonds and sweetness. The alcahol is totally hidden. Lives a good life on the palate. Had this served with a starter (spiced duck and chutney), and this was a perfect match.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2008 Bottle... Rich, malty aroma with notes of dark fruits, toffee, alcohol and yeast. A murky mohogany color. Very small, quickly diminishing khaki head. No lacing. Very malty and sweet. Bursts of caramel and apple. Ok, Ok. A State Fair Caramel Apple. Lively carbonation. Full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel. Long, sweet finish with just a hint of alcohol and apple at the ass end. This stuff is liquid candy. It wouldn’t know a hop if one fell out of the sky, landed on its face and farted. This beer is really way too sweet to be much in the way of "my thing", but I know quality when I taste it and I really dig the well-hidden, high ABV and the accompanying buzz an entire fifth provides. If anyone asks, I had ONE beer tonight. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Bottle conditioned. A big brown smoothy of a beer. Tight creamy head, loads of fruit, sultana's, malt sweetness. Last beer of a long weekend in Bruges and a good finish it makes too.

(bottle, brewed anno 2004) Dark reddish brown colour with a small creamy off-white layer. Aroma of dried fruits (raisins and prunes) and molasses. Very sweet flavour, also sweet malty and sugary taste with hints of fruitiness and caramel. Although the alcohol is perfectly hidden by its immense sweetness, this one is way too sweet for my kind of taste.

Bottle from Party Source, KY. Poured clear brown color with medium frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma was complex sweet malty yeasty. Medium body with lively carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet dark fruit flavor with medium sweet with small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Good brew.

Bottle: Distinctive reddish-amber coloured,... with a small foamy layer; strong herbal oaky nose with a touch of dried fruit, cocos and a vinous-alcoholic tinge, toasted malt also detectable; sweet flavour - full body; sweet-fruity finish with a touch of herbal bitterness. A bit too sweet to be really well balanced.........

A Mes rate: Head was poor and over all to quickly. Bubblegum hit to the aroma with some iron and seaweed and to the flavour too and slighty herbish. To me its just all sugar and alcohol. Sickly sweet. Personally I don’t see what the fuss is about. Its ok but far from great.

Koelschtrinker (7060) - Köln (Cologne), North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - MAY 18, 2011
8/12/10/11/10/11
