3.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours muddy brown w/ a spritzy spatter froth. Minimal hang time w/ only a thin ring of residual lace. Aroma of dark fruits, german chocolate cake, and sweet butter. Full nectar w/ very little residual effers. It’s almost still, even on the palate. Nada bubble. Big sweet complex malts w/ a mild yet defined sharp tartness, almost acidic. And I do mean sweet, barleywine sweet. This brew is very complex in nature. Flavors of fat carmeled apples and kiwi fruit. Brown sugar and molases. Huge black cherries and over ripened peach meat, plumy raisins, and brown, glazed cakebread (fruitcake). The kiwi is prominant. The finish is long and sweet w/ the kiwi fruit lingering well past it’s bedtime. This is a barleywine for sure. Overall: a good specimen but you really have to be in the mood for some serious acidic tart sweetness.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330 ml bottle bought at Craftissmo in Tsim Sha Tsui East.
Looks: Translucent deep amber red with zero yeast sediments; Three-quarter finger head and beige foam which lasts for about 30 seconds; Moderate sticky lacing with near zero carbonation.
Aroma: Very fragrant raisin and dark fruit which can be smelt half a foot away, with mashed banana, bubble gum, light alcohol, light chocolate, and cinnamon.
Taste: Strong sweet malt, with strong plum, raisins, dark fruits, cranberry, canned cherry, cherry liquor, sugar, medium alcohol, light chocolate, cinnamon, spices, light liquorices and very light grass.
Body: Mid to light, with thin but creamy palate.
Mouth Feel: Dominated by really sweet (not cloying, nice!) and comfy alcohol, with strong plums and cherries, complemented by lively cinnamon and light chocolates.
Booze: Expressive, yet very subtle at 11% abv, not screaming, just very comforting and getting warmer bit by bit. Sign of a good brew…
Hoppiness: Strong herbal and very light grassy nose and taste. Light liquorices makes it presence, not much to counter sweetness but provides a light bitter finish.
After Taste: wet, sweet and comfy to mouth.
Comments: As a fresh brew, it may be a little thinner, a lot sweeter, simpler in taste and less creamier than the benchmark Chimay Blue, but that’s because of the high alcohol content. On the plus side, it’s strong but nicely sweet, fragrant dark and red fruit nose and taste, and a superbly-managed booze to make it a nice sipper. Many previous reviews suggested its taste improves with aging, and I will do this for sure. Certainly a cool one, and let’s see what happens in few years time! :)

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Belgium. It is clear this is a dessert beer... Other than it being a little over sweet it is an incredible beer. Fruity, malty and spicy. Looses marks for just how sweet it is.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Very dark brown, almost black. Small bubbly beige head. Yeast, brown sugar, bit funky, roasted corn, overripe mango, caramel, meaty, sweet tomato sauce. Very sweet with a burnt-bitter touch. Dry at first, then it opens up into a medium bodied slightly sticky feel. Bit bubbly. Overall: too sugary sweet for me, aroma is OK.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
My favourite beer at the moment. Great appearance. Thick, creamy head, well-rounded mellow flavour of dark malt, fruit and a ripe sweetness. The high alcohol content is very well disguised by the rich mouthfeel.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Kasteel brune 11’ en pression 33. Propr chalice
Deep brown, small tan head. Some lacing.
Aroma: sweet, dark fruits, grains. Molasses.
Taste: sweet, even for the style. Very strong molasses finish. Some alcohol on the finish.
Palate: fairly full body. Thick texture. Medium long finish.
Overall: not my favorite for the style. Overly sweet. Good flavors behind it, but the sweetness is a bit over bearing.
