A strong Belgian brown ale.
After extensive tasting, trying to fulfil increasingly strict requirements, the brewmaster obtains a creamy, dark Belgian brown ale: Kasteelbier. The quality of the past is still unmatched and the beloved taste is very much of the present. Kasteelbier is a dark, artisanal beer, soft and mild, full and creamy. It can age for many, many years, as indicated on the bottle. 11% abv, serve at 12°C (54°F) (Translation by Martinus)

Bottle at home. This bottle has a best before of 07/2015 so I’m guessing it’s more than 5 years old. Chestnut / reddy brown coloured pour with a fading light tan head. Aroma is sweet sherry notes, mint, strawberry jam. Really sticky sweet. Maybe a little age on this one. Flavour is composed of sweet, unrefined sugars, sherry, little soap, booze, cake mix. Palate is full and stciy, sryupy sugars, moderate carbonation. Bit of a hot mess.

330 ml bottle from Club de Cervezas. Label says Kasteel Donker 11°. Pours an opaque dark brown color with burgundy hues and a medium beige head that diminishes quickly but leaves a nice lingering lacing. Aroma is pretty much a classic Dubbel fragrance on steroids. Aroma is heavily yeasty and malty with intense notes of dark fruits. Plums, prunes, dates, ripe figs and blueberries are on the spotlight. A secondary role goes for the Port Wine, caramel and molasses. Traces of phenolic notes. Taste is intense with complex flavors ebbing and flowing. Layered sweetness, mix up with dark fruity esters and liquorous hints to impress with a well-defined and rounded character. Reminds a lot a big-bodied Port Wine, only with a little bit of carbonation. Really great. Smooth, creamy, velvety texture. Booze touches well integrated so it doesn’t feel like an 11% ABV. A fantastic Belgian dark, like a hybrid between a Quad and a heavy Dubbel. Delightful! Would love to taste it side-to-side with a Chimay Blue and a Struise Pannepot. This one would not rate much lower... I’m surprised by the relatively low score.

So so dark, pours midnight black with a cream quite flat head. Smells of caramel and malt. The taste is very smooth of chocolaty malt with a very light tingly carbonation. For such a strong beer it is remarkably easy to drink. Lovely!

Very strong deep dark, brown ale. Creamy, soft, dry taste. The head is full and light brown.caramel, coffee, chocolate, The bitters embrace the sweetness. This is a perfect beer for a dark winter evening

330ml bottle at Corner Bar, Beijing. Pours dark brown with an off white head. Aroma of Begian yeast with fruit and malt. Very sweet taste like flat coke. Sweet finish.
