The best known and most valued of all Poznan meads, Kasztelanski has a delicate honey and root flavor and aroma. It was awarded gold medals in international Apimondia Beekeeping Congresses in Bucharest 1968, Nagoya 1985, Beijing 1993, National Wine and Mead Contests and the 1996 edition of the Polagra Trade Fair in Poznan. Referred to as a "trójniak" (triple), Kasztelanski is 30 percent honey and 60 percent water with 12 to 14% vol. alcohol. It needs to be stored for at least one year.

Bottle via the SLOTH. This creature has been a sitting in the fridge for quite some time. Dark amber brown body. sticky clear legs. Nose of honey and oak. Directly translates to mouth feel. My wife is sick. I am drinking this to ward off her germs. So, thank you Bertly for thinking of my health. Oak lingers to a lovely long finish.

Headless deep golden. Sweet honey nose with hint of grain and creamed caramel. Thick and syrupy. Very sweet without being sticky. Honey all over, with hint of marzipan and faint yellow fruits. [Shared bottle at RBNG2014]

Shared bottle, my last drink at the Grand Tasting at the RBNG-event at Fredrik 3.’s Hall. Dark golden body. Naked surface. Bread and honey on the nose. Sweet flavours of honey and dried fruits. Honeyed sweet ending. Much too sweet for me. Possible, but heavy to drink (Fredriksten festning, Halden 15.02.2014).

Bottle sample @ RBNG-14. Dark golden body. Nose is deep syrupy sweet honey, nuts, caramel and hints of wood and vanilla. Taste is sweet alcoholic honey, syrup, nuts and hints of wood and red berries. Full body. A pretty decent mead in the Polish tradition, but far from the major league.

Ceramic bottle, courtesy of Geokkjer. A dark golden body with no head. Lovey vinous aroma of honey, flowers and perfume. Flavour is sweet, vinous, not to heavy honey and floral. Fine body and a long, sweet aftertaste. Nice, tasty and very harmonic, not to sweet and raw on the honey side, as I prefer my mead.

Bottle. It pours a clear, dark golden to amber body, flat and still. The aroma has a nice lightly spiced honey scent and some flowery hints. Some citrus peel in the far back. Medium body, quite dry, with some residual sweetness chiming in. There’s honey and flowers in the flavor, some citrus and dried fruits. Lasting finish with honey and flowers. Certainly a nice mead, well worth a revisit. 130309
