A full-bodied, robust Porter with a rich chocolaty and roasted flavor. Named after the aggressive surf break just up the road from the bnrewery, this beer is not for the light-hearted beer drinker, but is a sure delight for any dark beer fan.

Black with fluffy and sticky off white head. Rich oil malty aroma. Taste is cocoa, coffee, malty, earthy - a little cream. A full flavored and solid porter. Poured from draft at Kauai Island Brewing tap room, part of a flight.

Draft at the brewpub. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (cocoa powder, toasted grain), with a note of vanilla. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation. Simple but drinkable rendition. Across the board, everything at this brewery is very generic and by-the-numbers.

On tap at the brewery, dark brown with a good sized tan head. Malty roasty nose, with a hint of chocolate. Low alcohol for a porter, but a full bodied beer with a great taste. Very drinkable.

Dark brown almost black pour. Aroma is roasted malt with chocolate and coffee notes. Flavor is the same with a nice level of roast. Medium bodied and smooth. Very drinkable, but a little thin and plain for my tastes.

UPDATED: MAY 19, 2013 Chocolate and a lot of roasty character comes through on the nose. Thick black and almost no head. Dry, bitter and a little sweet at the end. Overall not to bad.

A very good porter with lots of chocolate and some toast and spice. If we’d made it by earlier in our trip I’d have been tempted to pick up a growler.

1) (From sampler at the brewpub), 20/08/12. Light-bodied mahogany with a little head. Merlot and coke aroma; coal, English drainpipe, lightly peppered burnt toast- like it. Coffee and Merlot half-and-half stirred with a Twiglet. Hints of chipotle and berries. 727214=3.2. 2) (From growler), 20/08/12. Fat tan head; creamy and conditioned. Drinking chocolate, blackcurrant and berries nose. Fine-sifted, lightly carbonised, coal smoke and berry-forward flavour dripping with character and drinkability. Deeply sessionable, CE-like, British-style porter/storter.

Location: Draft at the Brewpub, 7/14/12

Aroma: The nose has lots of roasted malts and burnt malts with a little chocolate
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color with pretty much no head or lace
Flavor: It’s light sweet, light bitter, mostly toasty/burnt, and a touch of coffee comes out w/ the chocolate
Palate: This one is medium-full bodied with a smooth and rather dry roasted finish to it
Overall Impression: My 2nd addition to the Kauai Island repertoire is nice porter. It has a solid flavor and feel to it, and it works pretty well. The roasted and burnt malts are the dominant component and work much as expected in a typical offering from this style.
