With a label this cool, this Germanic, this should have been better. My sample might have been old--though it was a recent arrival to my store, it had a "04.04" marking on the bottom of the label, suggesting it was over a year old. There were no other signs of age, but I have noticed frequently that the delicate malt of a Helles can simply evaporate with age. Perhaps this accounts for the faintness of the malt here. The malt profile was good, but it was at times tough to find. There was, however, a light but very nice spicy hop fragrance. This might be a very good beer in proper condition. As it was, it seemed like a lighter version of Spaten or Lowenbrau. Not worth the cost.

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2010 Re-rate: Re-rate 2/21/2010 This bottle is purported to be fresh off the boat. Lightly hazy yellow orange tinged body. White head. Aroma is nice, biscuit, baking bread. Flavor is lightly sweet, a bit boring. Not bad by any stretch, but not spectatcular either. Drinking it by the reasonably priced stein full in Germany sounds like a great thing, drinking it at $3.50 a half liter in my living room, not so much. Old - 5/3/6/3/12 - 2.9 500 ml bottle. Towering meringue white head sits atop a lively clear golden body. The aroma shows a wee bit of cookie and some floral. The flavor is not too bad but I have had a much better helles before. The malts are weak with only a bit of that lovely cookieness I associate with the style. Its not at all offensive a would make for a good session lager.

Bottle (now labelled as Aktien Hell). Sweet syrupy corn malt aroma. Light golden yellow with little head. Sweet sage flavor primarily - light malt with no hops flavor that I can detect. Medium body. One of the best Helles I have ever had but I really like sweet sage - you might try it and hate it - I guess that’s why we average.

I liked this beer. Pours sparkly cold, forms solid, foany head which reduces to sketchy lace. Aromas of earth, peat, spice and meadow are present. Great soury taste, very carbonated, with prevalent hops. Malt and yeast are understated. Leaves the mouth feeling refreshed. Good example of a hell -- sunshine in a bottle.

Pours a blonde color with a very nice head that continually renews itself. Aroma is light and a bit grassy, but nice. There’s a hint of hops in there as well. Flavor is also light and grassy; not a whole lot thre but it’s refreshing. Palate is creamy and carbonated, though a bit watery. Overall, this is better than I was expecting. It’s far from outstanding, but nice.

Less thanimpressive aroma. Light golden, fine lacing head. Understated malt and fresh hops, delicately balanced, but a bit watery nonetheless. Light body.

Slightly hazed yellowish appearance, decent head formation. Soft malty aroma, mild cookie and vanilla, mild lemony hops. Mild palate, malty, slightly bready, lightly balanced hoppiness. Well put together and easy drinking, pretty much an average beer.

Had this at the Bier Garden in Portsmouth VA on 8-7-04. Hazed light colored amber. Medium frothy white head. Aroma is malty and sweet with some odors of straw or hay coming out. Taste is rather nice and refreshing. Some grassy notes blended together nicely with some sweetened malt undertones. Man this goes good with my schnitzel! Mouthfeel is full and rounded. Finish is more malty and grassy flavors with some bready or doughy notes. Good beer!

Quite a good Helles! In fact I am really impressed with thtis beer. Perfect Balance for style. Lightly hopped but again balanced and very present. The Maltiness of this beer is fantastic, perhaps slightly sweet but it compliments the yeast and or conditioning. Great mouth feel, velvety with a strong carbonation. Light straw in color and dense bright white head. A fantastic beer that lets you keep on drinking. Cheers
