2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle shared with a bunch of folks at DougShoemaker’s Decemberfest 2006 - courtesy of Jon. Dark brown with ruby flashes and a tiny tan head. Aroma of light chocolate, mellow malt, and a faint earthiness. Flavour - not much chocolate that I could find, just tastes like a bland brown ale to me, with a quick finish. Quite a disappointment, especially given the ornate packaging and the use of "extra-dark premium chocolate" in the recipe.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
650ml bottle pours a dark brown almost black color with a finger of off-white head that leaves a small smattering on lacing on the glass. Aroma is chocolate and caramel with some mild hops. Taste is lighter chocolate than the aroma with some caramel and light hop bitterness. A decent dark ale, but my expectations were not met.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Edition two. Bought two bottles in July 2009, drank one, was not impressed and forgot the second in the cellar. The rating is for the cellared bottle, it actually tastes a little better now.
Coca cola-like brown, minimal tan head. Little aroma of cofffee, chocolate and caramel. Low bitterness, medium sweet, surprisingly little chocolate in the taste, some chocolate bitterness, very little hops. No off-flavors in this one. It is just boring...does not do it for me. And for the price I would have expected a hell of a lot more

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
***review from Feb 9, 2008***
Poured out a mid sized, somewhat bubbly, off white / light tan head. A solid brown brew with decent retention and a very good amount of sticky messy lacing. The aroma is a bit of a let down as I was really expecting the Purdy’s chocolate to come out more but it lacks the standout smell that I expected. Some bitter chocolate and a good amount of roasted malts. I had to let this warm substantially (45 min to an hour) before an obvious chocolate aroma gained ground. Now if it had more of this good choc. smell this would be very appealing. It is still a nice brew, no question there. The taste (evaluated when warmed) give a first impression of lacking but it does get better. More bitter chocolate and roasted malts can be found but the flavour comes together on the back end of the sip. The bitterness keeps the sweetness down. Mouthfeel seems a bit too thin. Lots of carbonation. Weak chocolate aftertaste gets overtaken by a light but plesant bitterness. Sorry folks, this has disappointed me. Lacks a chocolate presence big time. I did really enjoy the beer though however not as a chocolate based beer. I could drink lots of these but the price will keep me away.

2.7 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
I expected a rich chocolate blast on the nose but disapointingly received the faintest of hints. More fitting was the colour, as a deep tan and that of pure dark chocolate. The taste was much lighter than I expected....but not a surprise considering the missing nose. Sweetness, but not from the chocolate? I worked and worked to get the taste of chocolate all throughout the palate but nothing arrived. It wasn’t until the finish that a gorgeously sutle dark chocolate finish presented itself throughout my mouth and throat, like fresh sheets being layed onto a bed. A peaceful finish for a beer that was mising alot of areas.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
A dark brown ale with a thin moka head. Light moka coffee with light vegetable notes. In mouth, a light porter with faint chocolate, rather light in mouth. Non-descript. Bottle tasted April 2008, probably 2 years old. Bottle from Capflu.

On tap at the Bulldawg at Silver Star Ski resort. Bartender said it was the Double Black stout from Whistler Brewing, but I couldn’t find this.
Black with big, off-white head. Aroma of light roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is slightly bitter smooth chocolate. Very dry finish. Solid beer to enjoy in the sun after a day of skiing.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: MAR 15, 2010 Why did I keep a bottle of this until now? I didn’t like it that much to begin with. Clear deep brown with a moderate cream coloured head. Chocolate is more apparent in the aroma than the flavour, along with faint toast and caramel. Semi-sweet palate of mild chocolate and caramel malt, husky and grainy, light stemmy bitterness. Finish is surprisingly dry. Mouthfeel is on the thin side.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
650ml brown bottle. Pours medium coffee brown with a fair sized rocky light tan head. Aroma is a bit nutty, light but noticable chocolate malt. Flavour has some modest cocoa/chcolate notes. Very liight malt in the finish, dry. Body is light, as is carbonation. Overall a little disappointing, too restrained, needs more body and distinct flavours.

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
no discernable chocolate in the aroma. Kind of salty, light malt. Pours a clear ruby brown, thin head. Body is thin. Some chocolate comes through on the finish, but it is suprisingly light.
