A Resignation Recipe Brewed In Collaboration with Redhook. A toast lager with notes of chocolate and coffee. Unlike a heavy porter or a stout itís amazingly light, crispy, and sessionable. KCCO Black is a delicious misfit.

12oz bottle pours with a clear amber body that supports a semi weak tan head of mostly medium size bubbles. The aroma offers up roasted malts and a light mix of toffee and nuttiness with thin ribbons of burnt malts around the edges. The taste has a nice dark roasted malt kick that includes dark roasted coffee and a mild burnt malt note. Beneath the moderate roastiness are sweet malts and a bit of sweet caramel and chocolate malts. Decent for the style.

Bottle at Zoo Brew. Pours a clear dark amber with an off white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has dark grains with some roasted malts and a touch of earthiness. Flavor has more roasted malts with earthy dark grains and a touch of bread.

Serving: Bottle. Ruby brown pour that looks more like tea than anything else. What little head there was fades quickly. Weak nose with bits of nuts and a little roast. Flabby body with a little stale chocolate, nuts, and watery roasted malt. Not much of a Schwarz in my mind.

Murky brown. Nose of mild nutty coffee/cocoa and lager malt. Flavor is mild cocoa and caramel malt with slight acidity. Light lingering toast/cocoa.

Bottle: The aroma consists of light roasted malt, coffee, nuts, with hints of chocolate and coffee. It pours a dark brown that is more orangish-brown with pretty good transparency when held to the light. It has a one finger khaki head that quickly fades to a very thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is some very thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of dark chocolate with hints of caramel. The finish has light burnt notes, roasted nuts, and a touch of coffee. Itís light bodied with lively carbonation that borders on being prickly. Overall, itís certainly not the best Schwarzbier Iíve ever had, but itís not the worst either. Iíd label this as one of those beers that if my only options at a bar were this or BMC, I wouldnít have a problem drinking this.

Bottle. Pours clear black with a small fizzy tan head that dissipates quickly leaving decent lacing. Aroma is roasty, burned, ashes. Flavor is lightly smoky, roasty, ashy, light sweet and light bitter, some acidity. Lightish body, low carbonation. Decent.

Black pour with barely any head. Faint burnt malt aromas. Flavor is almost as expected but more watery and bland. Eh, whatever, its a gimmick beer, nothing special.

Bottled MAY 22 14. More than a little annoyed to be seen trying this, but I managed to snag only a 12 oz bottle. Nose is heavily roasty with light wood and strong tobacco singe, kind musty and sour, as if it had been stored improperly. Deep dark mahogany is closer to black with volume, has a fizzy short brown head. Malty medium body with roast, chocolate, faint coffee, lots of nice tobacco and ash, oh yes the ash, some mild berry/fruit in the back. Remains something of a third or fourth bar beer but itís not so dirty or rough to avoid entirely.

12 oz. bottled Aug 06, 2014. Pours a clear deep mahogany with a ruby tint and a small spit of bubbles. Nose is coffee and scorched popcorn. Taste is scorched toast, mocha with a touch of caramel, and dry grass. Medium body has medium-high carbonation and a good balance. Not horrible, but definitely in the bottom 10% of the 27 schwarzbiers Iíve now rated.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark amber to brown body with a small fizzy beige head that faded to a thin ring. The nose is pretty solid, some licorice, roast, cocoa, and light roast coffee. Smells pretty well lagered, no fruity notes. The flavor is pretty decent as well, just a slight burnt caramel sweetness, a fair amount of licorice and roast, minimal chocolate and coffee. Light to medium bodied with a slight cling on the finish and soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty nice effort, I always appreciate a good Schwarzbier.
