4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Tap at The Lark. As I approached the bar at The Lark last night, a friend welcomed me and suggested that I try something new on tap. The dark brown ale looked to be very dense and the slight aroma of roasted malts came forward. It was probably too cold at the time to illicit anything more than the malts for my nose to enjoy, but I went ahead with the first taste to see what it was like. I found the delicious milk stout to be similar to one of my favorites from Colorado and when it warmed up a little, the subtle chocolates and chalky cocoa elements surfaced. As the slight lacing descended in the glass, I knew my friend’s suggestion had been perfect starter for my beer group’s meeting that evening and to share with other friends who would soon darken the door.

Thanks Dave! Bottled: unk
Pours the usual dark brown on black with a fairly solid sheet of faint taupe and little if any lace. I could smell this from the desk, some cocoa, lots of coffee, sharp CO2, leather, ink, tobacco (faintly) - decent nose. Flavor is initially, well, milky with a slight bitterness. There is a really pleasant follow with some dark chocolate and bitter coffee. The coffee in this one is bitter and bites back, hardcore coffee that percolated for a good hour before chillin and hittin the enamel on the dentites. A good assertive flavor profile. The body is medium with a bit hi carb for my preference and this takes away from the vastness of the beer. Overall a nice one to have around and enjoy. Glad I was able to try it and glad to have another for the cellar.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
FROM NOTES: August 2, ’12
Poured from a bottle into a shaker glass at BBC ’12.
A: Coffee as expected along with lactose, dark chocolate, some roasted maltyness comes through as well.
A: Pours an extremely deep, dark brown to borderline black with a one-finger tan crown that shows little retention or lace.
T: Roasted malt and coffee flavors dominate early, followed by some caramel and fruit flavors and a nice clean finish for a big beer. Uncommon for an Imperial, it is very balanced with malts and hops working equally for your palate. The lactose sweetness is just enough to notice but not strong.
P: Light carbonation, creamy smooth silkiness.
O: Oh how I love a good Imperial Stout and Joe Mama’s Milk is a mild sweet stout that is very easy to drink. It will NOT disappoint.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
The beer pours great with a solid black color, an off brown foamy head and good lacing on the glass. The beer smells decently with a coffe smell up front and a bitter chocolate malt on the back end. The taste is decent with a blend of burnt chocolate, brown sugar, and a coffee finish. The mouthfeel is decent with the beer being decently carbonated and a dry bitter aftertaste. Overall, this beer was decent but had too much similarity with the Mothers Milk Stout.
