4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 bonbright7 (179) - Bellport, New York, USA - SEP 25, 2009Tap at The Lark. As I approached the bar at The Lark last night, a friend welcomed me and suggested that I try something new on tap. The dark brown ale looked to be very dense and the slight aroma of roasted malts came forward. It was probably too cold at the time to illicit anything more than the malts for my nose to enjoy, but I went ahead with the first taste to see what it was like. I found the delicious milk stout to be similar to one of my favorites from Colorado and when it warmed up a little, the subtle chocolates and chalky cocoa elements surfaced. As the slight lacing descended in the glass, I knew my friend’s suggestion had been perfect starter for my beer group’s meeting that evening and to share with other friends who would soon darken the door.

My friend Tobias is a smart man. He only drinks beer in the morning. It’s because he doesn’t want to have to wait 10 hours to open a bottle. I think I’ll have that sort of mindset with this rating. Plus which, it’s Saturday. Who is going to tell on my ass? Hopefully no one I know. To snifter, it pours a dark-dark brown: trim khaki head. It’s a ring. It’s a ring. It’s a ring. No fingers. None. None whatsoever. None, none, none! Smells of cola... and of black liquorice... star anise... hay? Tastes relatively the same: cola, star anise, black liquorice, hay (?). Earl grey tea, charcoal, and lactose by swallow. Coffee is incredibly minor in the flavor department. Yeah, this is just like a boozy Coca-Cola....weird.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 dmac (3168) - Toms River, New Jersey, USA - APR 25, 2013
12oz bottle via 4 pack from Spirits Berkley. Poured a medium density solid blackish/super dark chocolate brown body under an average sized foamy dark beige head. Aroma is very nice, sort of like a cup of cold slightly sweetened black coffee, some burnt toast, vanilla. Medium to fuller bodied with average to slightly stronger carnation and a touch of hops or coffee bitterness on the finish. Favor is similar to the aroma with a big hit on cold black coffee with a touch of sweetener, dark dry burnt toast, old coffee cup. If you like coffee you will like this, hell only like beer and I like is, I like it a lot

Bottle at home. Aroma of roast malt, brown sugar, and black coffee. Flavor is much the same, with a sweet base, and nice roast and coffee flavors supporting. Slight smoke on the finish. Medium bodied, no hint of 8% ABV. Really good
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 jflopsu (92) - New Jersey, USA - FEB 3, 2013
An amazing stout. A strong smell of coffee comes straight from your cup. The dark beer has an amazing initial taste and average full-after taste.

Aroma of roast dark coffee and slight vanilla. Pours black and thin with minimal light head. Taste is pleasantly coffee, chocolate milk and light nuts. Mouthfeel is very thin which is actually nice.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 ben4321 (3003) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - JAN 13, 2013
Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 1/13/13
Aroma: The nose is of this beer is pretty much just roasted coffee, with some milk chocolate
Appearance: This beer pours into the glass an almost completely opaque brown-black color with a thick froth of lasting, medium brown head that leaves plenty of lace around the edges
Flavor: This one has the flavor of a full bodied coffee, it is a little sweet, but mostly just roasty
Palate: The body is closer to full then medium, with a thick, creamy feel, and a dry-roasted finish
Overall Impression:
I was just up in Kingston a few months ago, but I didn’t have a chance to get over to Keegan. I’ve only had a couple of their beers, but they seem solid overall. As for this one, it is quite interesting, and I can clearly see the appeal. It may be a bit too one-dimensional coffee, but it’s still pretty darn good.
3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jtclockwork (5105) - , New Jersey, USA - JAN 9, 2013
Bottle. Pours dark brown/black with off white head. Nose is terrific and rich freshly brewed coffee, java chips, mocha, cocoa, milk cream and rich chocolate malt. Taste has same elements but much more muted. Body on the lighter side of medium.
1.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 3/20 BlackIPA (717) - Rochester, New York, USA - JAN 5, 2013
Pours a thinish looking black with a decent sized light brown head consisting of fine bubbles. The head is flat and evenly spread out, unlike some of the rocky heads of certain Belgian ales. Aromas of burnt sugar, caramel, but no real coffee. First sip reveals - blah.... Very, very stale coffee. Like gas station coffee that’s been sitting on overnight and the cashier didn’t put a new pot on because she was too busy smoking cigarettes and scratching off lotto tickets. This is a really stale coffee taste. No lactose detected. This is a pile of shit. Not good. Scroll past.

Associated Supermarket, Bushwick growler ($10): Pours black with a moderate sized light brown head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malt, and a bit of chocolate. Taste is sweet. There ain’t too much roast. Mouth feel is nice and creamy. Easy drinking. This ain’t spectacularly complex, but it is a nice and drinkable stout.
