Big brother to our Mother’s Milk, Joe Mama’s starts with out Mother’s Milk recipe. We then add copious amounts of brown sugar to add body and increase the alcohol. After primary fermentation we then infuse a cold coffee extract from our friends down the street, Monkey Joe’s Roasting Company.

Tap at The Lark. As I approached the bar at The Lark last night, a friend welcomed me and suggested that I try something new on tap. The dark brown ale looked to be very dense and the slight aroma of roasted malts came forward. It was probably too cold at the time to illicit anything more than the malts for my nose to enjoy, but I went ahead with the first taste to see what it was like. I found the delicious milk stout to be similar to one of my favorites from Colorado and when it warmed up a little, the subtle chocolates and chalky cocoa elements surfaced. As the slight lacing descended in the glass, I knew my friend’s suggestion had been perfect starter for my beer group’s meeting that evening and to share with other friends who would soon darken the door.

Really nice nose, with a little bit of cocoa mixed in with coffee. Rich, delicious malt sweetness with hints of coffee. As it warms, there is an almost cherry-like flavor in the mid-taste to finish. Good body, but not too full. Finishes clean. I’ll definitely pick up one of these on the next cold night.

Pours a deep dark brown with a thin off white head which disappears quickly.....aroma of wet coffee grounds, earth......taste is earthy, bitter coffee grounds, dried out finish. Quite a different taste for a coffee stout.

Draft at Bierstube. Opaque black pour with a rather thick tan head. Fullbodied coffee milk stout. Slight nail polish in the nose - but mostly solid refined coffee flavors. Red peppers. Cocoa nibs. Light molasses. Creamy mouth feel.

Bottle... Pours clear and brown with a small, wispy, short-lived head. The nose consists mainly of earthy chili peppers, dark chocolate and a light facet of coffee. Full-bodied with a slick mouthfeel and nearly-expired carbonation. The flavor mirrors the aroma, but there is more of the earthy, chili pepper component here than coffee. This is an odd bird, and not especially pleasant. Coffee grounds in the aftertaste.

Strong coffee aroma with roasted malts and a slight sweet lactose smell. Taste is very smooth. Tastes of coffee roasted malt with a smooth lactose sweetness. Does not taste strong at all. Maybe get a hint of the brown sugar in here but it is subtle. Nice milk stout if you want some coffee flavors in your stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Matt McCue. Thanks, bro. Pours black with little head that fades minus a ring around the glass. Aroma is aldehydes, roasted coffee, sweet molasses. First sip is similar with big flavors of brown sugar and espresso. Finish is like the last sip of coffee with a bit of sugar. Nice beer.

Transfer from BA review on 4-27-12- Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance – Poured a deep brown- nearly black color with a big billowy light brown head. The head at a moderate pace at first, but then left a persistent ½ finger head on the brew. This faded very slowly to give a good level of lacing. Smell – Sweet aroma of milk are quite heavy in this brew. There are some lighter aromas of roasted malt and some very light chocolate notes. Taste – A nice cocoa flavor greets the tongue and stays present throughout the taste. The initial taste has flavors of vanilla sweetness mixed within. Towards the middle the sweetness intensifies, but instead of vanilla in flavor, a milky sweetness of lactose comes to the tongue. Mixed with the cocoa it brings a milk chocolate flavor to the brew. At the very end the milk chocolate is meet with some light coffee and a moderate alcohol flavor which leave a very pleasant flavor in the mouth. Mouthfeel – Medium bodied with a lower level of carbonation. While a little bit more creaminess would have done the flavors more justice the mouthfeel is good none the less. Overall – A good drinking mild stout with some great flavors. One to sit back with on a nice cooler evening and sip on with pleasure.

Bottle. Pours like black coffee. Tastes and smells like it too. Reminds me of Surly Coffee Bender, but more roasty.

(Tasting session #2 with Frank)  355 ml.
