First tasted this in Chestnuts Hotel, Ayr in January 2004. Cask, handpump dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thick creamy buff head and resembles Orkney Dark Island in looks. Rich roast coffee and caramel notes in the long seductive sweet aroma. Thick creamy mouthfeel in texture (like Dark Island) and superb lacing throughout. Dark malts give a rich moist and heavy fruit loaf base with dates, damsons, sultanas, molasses and caramel. Slight prickle of spicy hops but short lived in the aftertaste. Finish is thick and powerful with the malt as vinous port, treacle toffee and oak cask come through. This is a cracking Scottish Old Ale and highly recommended.

Yes this is the type of cask ale you want at xmas, Kelburns best offering easily. Aroma is Dark fruits in a deep roasted malt body with some lightly smoked notes. Taste is very similar with the sweetness and smokeyness of the malt combining excellently. An immence cask ale from kelburn here, one of the best scotch ales iv had.

Cask conditioned at The Anchor, Birmingham. Big rocky white head, creosote brown colour. Gently fruity aroma. Rich, blackcurrant flavour, with a creamy, mild quality. This has a lingering finish, and is very tasty, dark brew.

From cask at Doctors. Pours dark brown to black with a small white head. Mild roasted malty and chocolate aroma. Flavour starts sweet and soon goes into a more roasted malty flavour with clear notes of chocolate and some liqourice. Breadish and mild spiced finish with a bit of bitterness.

Cask @ GBBF 2005: Brown/red coloured. Brownish head. Fruit, cocoa and coffee in the aroma. Is dry in the flavour. Cocoa and coffee again. Light roastiness. Has a nice sweetness to balance the dark flavours. Is quite fresh. Is quite fresh. Me like.

On gravity at the Tewkesbury Beer festival, 4/02/2011. Jet black with a slight tan head. Sweetish aroma of dark fruits and caramel, with some balancing roasted malts. Flavour had the same sweetness, with some chocolate and milky coffee notes, leading to a dry finish. Very good.

Pint pulled at The Jolly Farmer in Bramley (Surrey), dark brown with some reddish tints and a bubbly head. Roasted malt aroma. Roasted malt flavours with both the coffee and chocolate coming through along with a subtle bitterness.
