COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular.
Smooth, dark & dangerous, this ale is designed to warm the cockles of your heart whilst sitting round the ingle after a long, cold winters day outdoors. Although dark and robust, the aftertones of liquorice & blackcurrent make this an ale of complex character, not to be missed.

First tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in April 2003. Cask, handpump dispense. Dark mahogany in colour with a thin creamy off white head. Strong roast grain and liquorice in the long aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a rich maltloaf base with syrupy figs, molasses and a note of liquorice as well. Short prickle of dusty hops noted in the brief aftertaste. Finish is malty with treacle toffee and plums present in the sweetness, dry roast nuts at the end. A superb Old Ale and highly recommended.

pivo (2540) - GERMANY - SEP 6, 2003
GBBF 2003, tap: Light nose of fresh hops. Could this be the "can-ned meat" type nose Lorenzo was talking about? Hazy brown color, low foamy head. Tastes of raisins and dark fruits at first, slightly oaky in the middle (maybe even peaty), with a vey careful and deliberate hop tinge at the end. Fairly complex and well-blended, though a little rough and raw. Not a high quality brew, but solid.

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2006 Aug, 2004 GBBF. Tea aroma. Like Hog Back T.E.A. Smokey malts, pale malts, hop bitterness but no hop fragrance. A clean and interesting ale - some blackcurrant. A cross between a mild and a best bitter. Excellent condition. [3.5]
Nov, 2006 Market Porter, Southwark. A dark tangy beer - slightly fading. Very tasty - fruit and wood and hints of tannic and tartness. A beer that grows. Solid. [3.5]
