COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular.
Smooth, dark & dangerous, this ale is designed to warm the cockles of your heart whilst sitting round the ingle after a long, cold winters day outdoors. Although dark and robust, the aftertones of liquorice & blackcurrent make this an ale of complex character, not to be missed.

(Cask at Gallows Bird, 20120908) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was small and white. Aroma had malts and molasses. Palate was medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, roasted malts, chocolate and bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty and bitter. A nice mild with long lasting roasty aftertaste.

From cask at Standing Order. Pours clear and golden brown with a small off white head. Aroma is toasted malty, breadish, toffee and caramelish. Medium sweet, caramelish and light toasted malty. Medium dry and roasted finish.

Cask at the Gallows Bird, Espoo, Finland. Clear dark copper colour with tiny off-white head. Aroma is rancid butter, some hops and dark malt. Flavour is pretty much the same with slightly less rancid butter. Not my cup of tea. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Real Ale tasted at Gallows Bird MICP. Malty nose with some hints of coffee. Not very foamy. Dark coppery colour. Soft malty and hoppy taste. Mild hoppiness. Nice colour.

36th CAMRA Cotswold beer festival (July 2012) in the lovely 15th century Tithe Barn: the setting for my tasting of this beer. Gravity poured pint: looked like the colour was mahogany in the barn, more chestnut in the bright sunlight outside, the off-white head didn’t change colour or hang around long. Fruit loaf smell, a sweet fruit loaf at that: the taste followed on giving me a lovely malt laden mouthful after mouthful: if I hadn’t been on a mission to try a few more brews this would have been my afternoon tipple of choice at the festival. Good body depth and with enough flavour to keep me happy: I prefer maltier, slightly sweet beers compared to the dry, bitter, citrusy hop beers anyway.

Not particularly dark in color, more of a deep amber. Immediate attack on the nose of straw and composting vegetables. Not getting anywhere the kind of fruitiness and rounded malts that I expected from the flavor. Not to my liking at all. (cask at the Scottish Real Ale Festival, Edinburgh, June 2012)

Cask at Kays bar. Ruby broon with a beige head. Very fruity malt flavour with light hops leading to an almost sour, tangy finish. Not bad.

First tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in April 2003. Cask, handpump dispense. Dark mahogany in colour with a thin creamy off white head. Strong roast grain and liquorice in the long aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a rich maltloaf base with syrupy figs, molasses and a note of liquorice as well. Short prickle of dusty hops noted in the brief aftertaste. Finish is malty with treacle toffee and plums present in the sweetness, dry roast nuts at the end. A superb Old Ale and highly recommended.

Cask by handpump at Callum’s Bar, Johnstone (6 Jan 12) - pours mahogany colour with a slighly sweet malt aroma, hint of toffee, slight spicy / bitter aftertaste.
