On cask ať Cloisters. Pours a dark ruby colour with a decent beige head. Aroma of port wine, caramel, alcohol and yeast. Similar flavours with moderate carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. I’m guessing port is the secret ingredient?

Tasted this in The Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in February 2008. Clear garnet red in colour with a thin buff tan head. Sweet note of fruity spangles in the intense aroma. Smooth creamy mouthfeel and velvet texture with good lacing. Mixed complex malts give a fiery digestive biscuit base with a strong array of fruit notes, with redcurrant and pink grapefruit predominant. Dry earthy notes in the bitter hop resins gives a woody like aftertaste. Sweet and tart fruit notes present in the finish with pink grapefruit evident, along with drier notes of liquorice and a hint of nutmeg perhaps? A decent Scottish Strong Ale in style and worth seeking out.

Half, hand-pulled cask at JWDs Henglers Circus. Creamy, beige head resting on top of a nice and clear mahogany coloured body. Smell of earthy malts and dark fruits. Brittle caramel malts in flavour sustained by dark fruits, making it all a bit jam-like. Roasted bitter end. Oily palate Medium bodied. A good one (Glasgow, 12.04.2012).

A Mes rate. Gravicask at Pigs Ear. Darkish amber with an oily film topping. Earthy malt with some slight oil and a hint of sweetness. Bit of bacon fat in the finish. Nothing too special.

Cask in Blackfriars. Aroma is tart fruit, white grapes, slightly grassy and watery. Taste seems very thin, watery, toffee malts and a bit much bittering hop. But no alcohol to be seen, suprising for the strength.

[cask at the Café Royal, Edinburgh] Dark brown pour with a half-inch high white head. Aromas of roasted malt and a touch of chocolate – continues on the palate, initially at least, before petering away to almost nothing. Starts as a slightly spicy roasty Christmas beer, ends up tasting like a mild. No idea what the secret spice is though [22122008]
