UPDATED: MAY 8, 2006 2005. Ah the Kellybrook Cider Festival... I was unable to attend this year, unfortunately, but was brought some scrumpy by my housemate. It didn’t seem as good as last year’s scrumpy, but then again it didn’t have the advantage of Morris dancing to make me even more positive about the whole experience. Sitting on the bench, the jug of scrumpy has bubbles rising to the top as I watched it - it’s definitely still fermenting (at about 1.020 when I got it +> ~6% abv). Murky yellow colour with crap sinking to the bottom of the glass. Aroma is quite yeasty (bread yeast!) with a distinct clovey aroma (in a nice way), bananas, pears and apples. Slightly sickly honey aroma in there too. Tastes very good - like lighter-bodied, alcoholic apple juice. Mild acidity and a faint tea-like astringency as you drink more. No acetic acid this year. Definitely has a pear character to it aswell. Nice, but unfortunately not up to last year’s extremely high standards. Thus is the nature of scrumpy I suppose.
2006. At the festival this year. Turbid yellow with chunks. Sweet, juicy and milkshakey. A lot cleaner than last year, with basically zero fermentation products. Tastes like apple juice only with 7% alcohol. Unfortunately too sweet and bloating to be really drinkable. We all agreed 2004’s scrumpy is still the undisputed champ.
