On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a thick pretty tan head. Aroma of roasted, sweet malt. Flavor of roasted malt, a hint of chocolate, hint of pretzel, hint of charred malt, and lots of sweet malt. Ok, a basic imperial stout but nothing too special.

As thin as the day is long. Prominent dry dark chocolate and coffee, but no finish and no depth.

Pours a pitch black that no light passes through. Nose seems muted. Flavor is good. At first (I feel) it starts off with very little and then kicks in with great roasted malt flavors and a general roasted flavor as well. If I were naive and had not had others of the style before, I might give it a higher taste score. Feel is good. Thick with some character, but not so thick that it is odd or overdone. Very drinkable, though not the best example of the style. Just drinkable because even though it is this particular style, it isn’t entirely putrid. I have to give respect for trying, and doing a pretty good job, on such an extreme style.

Draft at brewpub. I had expected more from this after looking at it and after a really nice coffee filled sniff. Lots of coffee and chocolate. A touch of alcohol too. Darkest black with a decent head. But the flavor didn’t really hold up. The malt flavor was there, then it faded to water. The hops came in, but not enough either. It was too thin and I had been really expecting a much bigger beer.

Really light and watery for a stout. It throws off the whole brew. Not a bad flavour, but I prefer to think of it as a roasted ale.

Draught at Kellys Restaurant & Brewpub, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Pitch black beer with a tan head. Roasted malt and coffee in the aroma, not very heavy but delicious. Quite full in the flavor dominated by roasted malt, coffee, citrus with a touch of alcohol. Good hoppy bitterness and smokey tones also. Delicious stout, if they really brew it with malt extract I’m truly amazed...!!!!
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 whaleman (2176) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 13, 2004
Tight sudsy tan head and black body with amber edges. Roasty, strong coffee, and chocolate notes. Could use more hop bitterness in the flavor. But then again this beer is a bit thin all-around for an imperial stout and could use more of everything. Still a tasty and decent beer. A nice, big stout, but too feeble compared to elite Imperial Stouts.
