Tap at Spuyten Duyvil: Pours a nice muddy maroon/purple. No clarity at all; completely murky, with a thick and creamy tan head. Very oaky aroma. Has a mild raspberry tartness along with a touch of dark toffee when it warms. Creamy and smooth body. Flavor is not sour, it’s just mildly tart. Has a very natural raspberry presence. Clean and fresh tartness with an earthy brett presence. The oak is apparent and smooth with lots of toasted flavors of earthy wood. Twiggy, and gains a very subtle dark toffee sweet back note when it warms. A very nice example of the style.

A surprising success. This beer has totally changed since the cask fest and has become a great example of an American sour. Mild sourness and big oak in the aroma, with light strawberry. Very oaky flavor with the sourness playing a nice, mild backdrop. Very balanced and drinkable, and quite spot-on style.

Tap at Spuyten Duyvil. Cloudy red-brown beer with a thick white head. Aroma is pretty solid, softly sweet and fruity with a lot of raspberry over a soft oakiness, dark malts and a bit of light woody notes. A kiss of vanilla and brown sugar and just a hint of tartness. It smells pretty solid actually. Flavour is lightly tart and a bit of balsamic sweetness over the light sweet raspberry. It’s much better than I would have expected with good balance and a decent palate although I’d really like to see the acidity dialed up a bit.
