January 12th, 2013 - I don;t normally go in for the seasonal obsession with mint flavors, especially mint chocolate. But this beer proves that it can be a stellar flavor when mixed properly, and not distributed by cranky looking fake Santas at the mall. To all appearances it is a stout, with a good cork of foam on top, brownish, and a deep, heavy body masking the carbonation below. But the smell is intoxicating. Really, absolutely hypnotizing. Rich, thick gourmet brownies immediately come to mind, with a sprig of wintergreen and mint laid on top like they were on photo shoot with Saveur magazine. Cocoa powder is predominant too. This aroma is practically chewy (weird), and creamy, letting off an indescribably palpable scent. The taste ups an already tall ante. The iconic taste of Ghirardelliís dark chocolate forms the basis of this deep, velvety treat, with ribbons and streams of mint and more wintergreen to cool the palate, and give the heavy chocolate some complexity. It sits and lurks and bellows and growls on the tongue, and leaves a long aftertaste, light and minty, like a freshly chewed mint leaf. I knew this would be good, but I didnít know itíd be one of those hallmark beer tasting moments.

Vintage 2012, 12oz bottle. Thick black pour. Smells of Thin Mints cookies. Sweet chocolate with sweet mint. Thick bodied, heavy. Well balanced, perfectly flavored. Rich cocoa, sweet mint. Finishes with hints of roasted malts, burnt grains. Iíve had other mint chocolate beers, by far, this is the best. A beast. Just as I thought Cigar Cityís was great... Stone, bring this one back! Sampled at Hop Con 2.0. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of mint chocolate ice cream with a hint of malt. Taste of bitter chocolate, roasted malt, peppermint oil underneath everything. Lingering bitter mint chocolate. I was surprised this worked but it really does.

Bottle from Whole Foods Washington P Street. Pours black with an inch of khaki foam. Leaves a lot of lacing in the glass. The mint really comes through on the nose as it warms. Bitter chocolate on the tongue with the mint coming through on the finish. Hides its alcohol well. Solid but not as spectacular as I was hoping.

Pours a nice black color. Mint, chocolate, roasted malt, and a bit of caramel sweetness on the nose; all follow onto the palate. As it warms, the mint really comes through and itís like drinking a thin mint cookie. Very good if you like mint flavor, which I do.

12oz bottle as a trade extra. Pours a jet black with a small white head. Aromas of mint and chocolate, duh. Taste is semi sweet and slightly bitter. Flavors of mint, chocolate, roast, some coffee. Very thick mouthfeel. Impressive, actually. Finishes pretty sticky and sweet with boat loads of mint. Pretty decent.

Very dark brown body with thick khaki head. Nice lacing. Minty, dark chocolate & roast malt aromas. Bittersweet dark chocolate, mint flavors remind me of a hotel pillow mint. Excellent.

Purchased 2012. Pours a deep black with a razor thin tan head. Has a rich chocolate dark roasted caramel malt nose, with some dark fruity notes and slight licorice sweet bitter flavor on the end. The palate is a full rich creamy body with good carbonation, a bit of sticky mouth feel. The finish is sweet chocolate, roasted caramel malt, some mild mint flavor shows up as it warms up, has a lingering kind of sweet chocolate roasted bitterness on the end. Was expecting a bit more mint but could be the aging. Overall a good drinking tasty and full flavored brew.

Very black, not quite as much mint as I expected, plenty of chocolate though.
