Mint, chocolate, oatmeal, Imperial Stout. Beer bliss. 9.6% alcohol.
Original recipe was made by a San Diego guy named Ken Schmidt. Stone Brew Co. was assisted by some guy from Iron Fist Brew Co. in making this beer as well.
They suggest letting it sit in the cellar for a few years before drinking. I donít have a cellar, so Iím drinking it now. And even if I did have a cellar, I would still be drinking it now.
The mint flavor is overwhelming. The Imperial Stout body is exceptional. This beer is really bad-ass.

Tasted from draft. Pours black with khaki head. Aroma is big time mint. Flavor is huge mint up front with some dark chocolate and coffee. Moderately bitter with drying mouthfeel. Interesting and pretty tasty beer.

Pours pitch black with a thin, half finger mocha head that immediately settles into a thin ring. Sporadic spots of lace left behind.
Sweet chocolate malt aroma with subtle roast but not much mint character. Sweet bakerís chocolate dominates the nose with cocoa, fudge and chocolate cake along with lactic sugars, toast and coffee bean. After it warms, thereís a very faint mint presence but itís overpowered by the chocolate, malt and lactic notes.
On the fuller end of medium bodied with a stronger roast presence than the nose suggests. Still, it has lots of sweet chocolate but thereís also burnt toast, espresso bean and oatmeal. Dessert-like chocolate cake and sweet malt flavors with lactic creaminess and sweet sugars. Some burnt malt and earthy hop bitterness. The mint comes in faintly towards the end of the palate but lingers well after with a cool, refreshing finish. Could use more mint but itís well balanced and the high abv is excellently masked. One of the better stone collaborations.

12 oz bottle poured into St. Bernardus snifter.
Appearance: Pours nearly black with a short, dark tan head that soon faded into a thin collar and few, bubbly íislandsí.
Aroma: Dark roasted malts, mint (mainly peppermint) and chocolate dominate. Some black licorice and alcohol esters too.
Flavor: The mint is there at a nice level: fairly obvious but not overpowering the rich, dark roasted malts or even the notes of dark chocolate and hints of dark, dried fruits. Bitter dark chocolate, light spearmint and faint coffee in the mildly bitter finish.
Feel: Full, smooth body with light carbonation and light warming. A faint bite from the mint and alcohol.
Overall: Perhaps not as good as I was hoping for from Stone, but given that this is a chocolate mint RIS it is certainly well done and roughly as expected. The high ABV is well hidden. Although the mint treatment was conservative, Iíd probably like even less in an ale as good as the base Stone RIS.

Pours dark and thick with bold aromas of mint and chocolate. Taste is spot on mint chocolate, not too sweet. Finish is all chocolate. They really nailed this. Perfect for beer float.

On tap at Daily Growler in Upper Arlington - not sure how they got a keg of retired brew, but here we are: blackish pour, frothy tan head. aroma of chocolate, mint, roasted malt. tastes follow suit - rich sweet mint chocolate chip that stays drinkable somehow. finishes moderate bitter. palate on the thin side of medium. quality. 7.8

Draft at Liberty Station. Pours dark brown with a creamy bubbly tan head. Tastes like mint chocolate chip cookies, dry wood, booze. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet mint chocolate chip ice cream with light alcohol.

2012 bottle thanks to DrSilverworm. Black pour with a very small head. Aromas are chocolate fudge, mint, light coffee and raisins. Tastes more minty than the aroma. Strong mint and dark chocolate. Tobacco and raisins in the finish. Thick mouthfeel. I liked this way more than I expected to.

Bottle to snifter. Nose is straight up Andes mint. Pitch black pour. Taste is very minty, some chocolate, minimal coffe/roast. Kind of gimmicky, but pretty tasty. One is good. Two is too many.

"#3600! Not sure what role Iron Fist played with this beer. Nobody who had this last night likes that brewery much, but we all love Stone and Ken as well, so we went into this with sky high expectations, espcially given the style and ingredients. We were not disappointed. For some reason a couple of us got the mint right of the bat, and a couple (like me) needed a minute or 5 for the beer to open up, but man did it pop when it did. Decadent without being the slightest bit overly sweet or cloying. Near perfect balance between the mint (think Andes), cark chocolate, roasted malts and a touch of bitterness. Goes does ridiculously easy for nearly 10%. Canít wait to have this as dessert in a couple days, all on itís own. We followed a huge chocolate porter with this. Iím wondering if I could like it any more as a standalone. Phenomenal either way. LOVE the combo of these flavors. Great idea, and well made!"
