4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A very dark porter -- black; only the faintest highlights of deep purple-red can be seen at the edges of my glass. A pillowy head the color of cinnamon sugar billowed from the top of my glass so nicely I was tempted to take a picture. This monster slowly retreats to a sudsy top layer, but some spotty lacing sticks in its wake. According to the bottle, this thing was brewed with 700 lbs. of coconut, macadamia nuts and coffee. It’s the coffee, however, that rules the nose. Scorched malts are there too, as is a savory character I’d attribute to the nuts. As it warms, sweeter notes of brown sugar and coconut emerge, as well as rye bread flavors. I’d describe the flavor as meaty: the toasted coconut is far more noticeable, blending with a salty nuttiness and semi-sweet mocha. Body is great: full, creamy, viscous. The alcohol warmth is noticeable, but not distracting, and the carbonation is minimal. Lot of complexity here.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
From notes. Enjoyed at the Ashley’s Rare & Vintage Beer TasteFest on June 07. The pour is a dark, dark brown, but definitely a little thin, with a thin white head and no lacing to be found. The aroma is strong on coffee with some light roasted malts and a strange green coconut presence. Reminds me of other beers I have had where it’s like you’re drinking coconut leaves. Meh. The flavor takes right off with the green coconut leaves, and strangely dominated by coffee. The mouth feel is thin and slick, with the carbonation helping the body a little. The aftertaste is light, coffee oriented and leaves something to be desired.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
The color of the body is a very dark brown to nearly black which blocks out almost all light. On top sits a small tan head about one finger tall. It slowly fades down to just a ring of foam with a thing film in the middle. This head is slick and leaves no lace on glass as it just slides right down. In the nose I get notes of sweet roasted malt, hints of dark coffee, sugar cookies and delicate nutty notes. The flavor has a mild nutty character with plenty dark roasted malt and coffee notes. Hop notes are mild and add some light leafy/earthy hops notes and bitterness towards the finish. Overall it remains on the sweeter side throughout and into the finish. Its 8.5% alcohol is mellow and refined, adding only a very genital warmth. On the palate it has a velvety smooth and slick feel with mellow carbonation.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a pint glass and a snifter.
The appearance was a nice looking dark brown to black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. The lacing made an effort to cling but slides for the most part.
The smell had a nice dose of coconut overlaying some gentle notes of coffee and chocolate.
The taste took all of those previously mentioned smells to combine wonderfully.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium in body with not much of a sessionability about it. I sipped this one for the most part. The carbonation was slightly sharp but nothing overbearing.
Overall, this was a pretty good coconut flavored Porter though I didn’t get the macadamia nuts. No worries, I’ll seek again fresher.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Chinchill 12 oz bottle to Iowa City rewfest Teku, courtesy of brosail. Thanks! Pours a dark brown appearance with a brown head. Fairly smoky, coconut, dark cocoa powder, a bit roasty, a bit hot aroma. Carbonation is a bit low. Roasty, a bit burnt malty, lightly nutty, vanilla, chocolate, anise flavor with some roast and light smoke on the finish. Faint metallic note. Glad to finally have tried this one. Thanks sailor!
