(Cask at Craft Beer Co Islington, London, 30 Nov 2014) Dark brown colour with hints of ruby. Frothy beige head. Malty, slightly fruity nose with notes of caramel, red fruit and dark bread. Malty, slightly fruity taste with caramel, dark fruit, a touch of chocolate and gentle spicy bitterness. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Nothing strange, just plain good beer, tasty and very well balanced. Nice one.

Cask at Cask P&K. Dark brown, orange tinge, small scummy off-white head. Aroma is jamaica ginger cake, treacle. Body is medium, touch of carbonation and foam. Taste is light chocolate cake, soft bitterness. Very good, drinkable beer. Not really a bitter - more like a brown ale or mild for me.

Quite fruity, very dark, almost black, with a somewhat sickly oily palate. Bit of a strange one.

36th CAMRA Cotswold beer festival (July 2012) in the lovely 15th century Tithe Barn: the setting for my tasting of this beer. Gravity poured half-pint: almost black in colour with an off-white head which started and finished rather thin. The smell was roasted/toasted malts with hints of a hop content if you sniffed hard enough. The taste was a blend of hoppiness and maltiness, each vying for domination: the hops just about winning, although your eyes try to tell you it is maltier because of its colouring.
