36th CAMRA Cotswold beer festival (July 2012) in the lovely 15th century Tithe Barn: the setting for my tasting of this beer. Gravity poured half-pint: almost black in colour with an off-white head which started and finished rather thin. The smell was roasted/toasted malts with hints of a hop content if you sniffed hard enough. The taste was a blend of hoppiness and maltiness, each vying for domination: the hops just about winning, although your eyes try to tell you it is maltier because of its colouring.

Cask-conditioned at the Kent Beeriodical, Seven Stars, Bristol February 2012. Ruddy brown in colour with a decent, off-white head. Sweetish, earthy malt aroma with some berry fruits and grassy hops. Flavour was similar with a decent, bitter finish. Good.

Cask conditioned handpump Southampton Arms London. A muddy dark brown coloured beer with an off-white head and lacing. A bit of citrussy hop with a grainy background. Reasonably tasty and nicely balanced. This is a hard beer to characterise as it’s nowhere near hoppy enough to be a Black IPA yet is dark and hoppy. Black IPA is an oxymoron as is Black Golden Ale which is what this really is. It can only therefore be called a bitter, and as a bitter it’s more than pleasant.

Cask at Southampton Arms. Dark red brown colour with golden head. Aroma is hoppy, touch of stink, citrus and a bit of creaminess. Taste is bitter, creamy and lemony, not much roast. Bit fruity towards the end, maybe orange and strawberry. More of a black coloured IPA, than a black IPA, if that makes sense.
