COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale™ With a little creative curiosity, we used spent bourbon casks, fresh from decanting, and filled them with our very own Kentucky Ale. From barrels that once held the finest bourbons of Kentucky, we present Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, a smooth, golden elixir unlike any other. Subtle yet familiar flavors of vanilla and oak are imparted to this special ale as it rests in the charred barrel. We attribute this to what the bourbon maker calls the “angel’s share”. Elegantly smooth and modestly carbonated, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is a fine sipping ale with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted Kentucky bourbon.

12oz Gift bottle - Toffee liquid with off white head. Vague smoke on nose, mostly bourbon notes (Not Woodford, the wino-killing kind) and some sort of wax. Palate is a ton better, creamy apples not unlike apple crisp.

Fruity nose with oak and hints of bourbon. Pours blonde with no head. Vanilla and bourbon flavors with butterscotch, not very complex, bourbon flavored soda.

Amber-orange glimmers under a fluffy white blanket. A few swirls leave spackles of lace before belching out a nose of bourbon and American white oak in epic proportions. Vanillin and vanilla extract, bourbon, soft white oak, vanilla cream, brown sugar, pie crust, caramel nougat, maple, and Swiss hot chocolate topped with those mini freeze dried white marshmallows that I would always eat first. I am taken back a bit by how thin his mouthfeel and body is in comparison to his nose; detrimental by no major means, but definitely at odds with first impressions. Weak up the front, in the middle maple and brown sugar melt and thoroughly coat all nooks, crooks, and crannies of my mouth. A short finish whispers of wood, vanillin, and Swiss hot chocolate. Golden pie crust works wonderfully with a dry woody finish while his middle continues to delight with bourbon, vanilla, maple, chocolate cream, black cherries, and graham crackers. On the downside, his middle is rather forceful and almost overwhelming with an intense sweetness that borders on a turn-off. He finished light and intense at the same time, a bit of a dichotomy I still feel today.

Overall, he was so bourbon forward ale that if one were to close their eyes, you could easily imagine you were drinking bourbon and not beer. I’m not really OK with that. No matter how much bourbon I enjoy in my beer, I still want to know I am drinking beer. If I want bourbon, I will drink bourbon. Not bad but not great; there is definitely a need for more balance in the Kentucky Bourbon Ale.

UPDATED: OCT 31, 2011 On tap at The Pub (great place) in downtown Louisville, Live on Fourth and had in bottle. Pours a clear light amber with small off-white head. Some lacing, medium carbonation, and light bourbon aroma. Taste is caramel malt, nice bourbon, a little oak with nice vanilla in the finish. This one is underrated get one.

Clear light golden with a fizzy white head. Sweet orange, vanilla, bourbon, and oak aroma and taste. Decent.

Pours a dark copper color with a lot of floaties in there. Aroma is balanced nicely between the oak and bourbon. There is also some nice vanilla notes as well. The taste follows the nose, but the bourbon is up front more than the oak. I wish this one had a little more body to it. I think i’d rate it a little better if it did.

Found this one bottled in Bardstown, Kentucky. Light, toasty nose with a clear, dark yellow pour with no head. Slightly bubbly. Wonderfully sweet, oaky and syrupy flavors well-balanced with a nutty hoppyness that is unusual but very good. I expected this one to be a bit one-dimensional but if it wasn’t so expensive, this would be a fantastic sessionable ale. I loved it.

Honey, whiskey aroma.. Maple colored, good head holds to a film. Looks like cognac. Thick sugary finish.

Pours. Lightly hazy golden copper with a small bubbly white head. Aroma of oak, vanilla, light bourbon, caramel, sweet molasses notes. Flavor of vanilla, light whiskey, caramel, a little thin. Reminded me a little of oaked arrogant bastard.

(bottle - 12 oz) Clear amber pour with a very thin layer of white foam. Aroma is pretty much straight bourbon. Some vanilla and oak but mostly bourbon. Bourbon flavor at the beginning that fades quickly to a very mild and malty middle. The bourbon and oak notes come back at this point and really give off a nice bourbon and vanilla flavor. Finishes very dry and surprisingly clean. Some light bourbon notes on the aftertaste but that’s about it.
