Award-winning Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale® is a unique sipping beer with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted bourbon. Our Kentucky Ale® is aged for up to six weeks in freshly decanted bourbon barrels from some of Kentucky’s finest distilleries. Subtle yet familiar flavors of vanilla and oak are imparted to this special ale as it rests in the charred barrels. Pleasantly smooth and robust, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale may also be served as an aperitif or after-dinner drink. Launched in 2006, it has grown to become the flagship beer of the premier name in barrel-aged beers: Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company.

Pours a hazy amber with a thin white head. Decent retention, minimal lacing. Smells boozy, lemon grass, wood. Honestly smells more like liquor than it does beer but it’s not necessarily off-putting. Taste is odd. A weird malty flavor that is hard to pin down, a little bitterness, and a faint burn from the alcohol. Taste is very different than the aroma would let on. The maltiness is akin to a Marzen but it has a weird twang to it. Mouthfeel is crisp, a little on the light side. This beer is.......interesting. Not really sure how I would sum this one up besides interesting. I love Bourbon but I’m not really getting that from this beer.

Bottle - Slightly hazy golden colour, small, collapsing white head. Sweet malty aromas with lots of caramel, vanilla and wood. Taste is also sweet with decent bourbon notes, some vanilla, toffee, low hop bitterness. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, oily texture. Nice barrel aged beer, but not so special.

Sour beer. Tastes like it didn’t ferment properly. Pours amber with some milkiness. Little head. Sour aroma, but nothing like having a decent hoppy IPA

Very unique beer really one of a kind. Great nuances of bourbon on the nose and pallet. The deep malt flavor is complemented nicely by caramel and vanilla notes.

From a cask at the 2016 Atlanta Cask Ale Festival. Very pleasing aroma with a load of caramel and faint bourbon. The flavor provides a much stronger bourbon barrel effect with loads of woody barrel and toffee notes, moderate bourbon notes as well as some vanilla. Buttery flavor and feel. Overall: Certainly one of the best from this brewery. Highly recommended for fans of BBA beers.

Pours hazy gold with a quick white head. Nose is straight bourbon. Other than a few hop and bread notes, flavor is all bourbon too. It is exactly as advertised and not one bit more.

Draft pour at Mtc Office. Poured clear amber with slight head which quickly dissipated. Except for the foam ring, you might think this looks like bourbon. Aroma is a pleasant scent caramel and toffee. Initial taste is mixture of caramel with a hint of hops with nice aftertaste reminiscent of bourbon. Nice to try.

Poured into a snifter. 2.5 A: Clear dark orange/light amber color. About one finger of frothy off-white head that falls almost instantly and leaves no lacing. 3.0 S: Nose is primarily the barrel. A lot of leather, apple, vanilla, oak, toastiness. Caramel and toffee which could be coming from the barrel or the base beer. Hints of grass with a fresh mountain spring water component. It’s not bad, but it smells more like watered down bourbon than beer. 2.75 T: Like the nose, this beer is just a bourbon delivery vehicle. Tastes like it smells with leather, apple, vanilla, oak, and toastiness being most prominent. On the drier side, but does have a sweet caramel toffee flavor. 3.25 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. This would benefit from a little more body, but it does have some creaminess to it. 3.0 D: It’s okay for what it is, but it’s not that great of a beer. ★ 900 characters DavoleBomb, Sep 11, 2015

This beer is advertised. Pleasant aroma, full bodied, sipping beer. It’s got a deep Amber coloring and delivers on the promise of the bourbon cask orientation. Something you definitely want to try once.

Pours a reddish amber with a small white head. Lovely beer. Lots of bourbon aroma and flavour. Vanilla is also present in the taste. Very easy to drink and obviously quite strong. Not a huge amount of complexity in the flavour but it doesn’t need it

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale was my first introduction to Alltech Brewery and to the Bourbon Barrel Aged Beer style altogether. When I first tried this Kentucky Strong Ale around 10 yrs ago, when it first was released, it instantly became my go-to beer. I even went on a tour at Alltech’s brewery and distillery, while finishing up the Bourbon Trail. Bourbon Whiskey is my drink of choice, so Bourbon Barrel Aged Beer is right up my alley. My palate has evolved drastically since then and the number of craft beer choices has increased exponentially. Not one I choose anymore due to my “thirst” of anything new, craft, and local, but when I do get to enjoy one, I am never displeased.
