COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Award-winning Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale® is a unique sipping beer with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted bourbon. Our Kentucky Ale® is aged for up to six weeks in freshly decanted bourbon barrels from some of Kentucky’s finest distilleries. Subtle yet familiar flavors of vanilla and oak are imparted to this special ale as it rests in the charred barrels. Pleasantly smooth and robust, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale may also be served as an aperitif or after-dinner drink. Launched in 2006, it has grown to become the flagship beer of the premier name in barrel-aged beers: Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company.

Sampled at GABF on 9/16/2010. This blond ale pours a light gold color from the tap. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet with atouch of caramel. A light to medium bodied golden ale. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are slightly herbal. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Kind of light tasting, even for a blond ale. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

12oz bottle on 21st May 2016 into a Corsendonk glass on my daughters patio in California. Murky dark orange with a beige unlasting head. A bit disappointed with this to be honest, there was a trace of Bourbon esters in the aftertaste but otherwise I thought this bland and uninteresting for a so called barrel-aged beer of 8.2%ABV.

Pours a red brown with minimal head. Smells of vanilla and oak, a bit too cloying. Taste is off - bourbon noted good but the beer underneath seems deeply flawed - unpleasant.

Clear darker amber, moderate head, good lace/retention. Aroma is vanilla, sweet caramel, moderate alcohol. Medium bodied, sweet with caramel and vanilla. Pretty straightforward and one dimensional.

Pours a nice reddish orange color. Aromas of nice citrus/grapefruit hops and sweet malts. Flavor starts nice crisp bitter hop and then mellows to a nice malt

2015 BJCP Category: 33B Specialty Wood-Aged Beer (base style: 22B American Strong Ale)

AROMA: Moderate bourbon aroma, though slightly buttery. Some dank resiny hops. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Deep amber, slightly hazy. Small, off-beige head. Poor lacing and retention. 2/3

FLAVOR: General amber malt base. Some sweetness but not a sweet brew per se. Some red apple flavor, but not cider-like tartness. Bourbon/woody flavor emerges on finish for mild vanilla sensation. Faint butterscotch. Becomes astringent as it warms. /20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; slightly crisp. Surprisingly clean finish. Alcohol presence is minor. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Quite boring considering what it’s supposed to be. No complexity, little bourbon flavor. Seems to be a macro product masquerading as a limited release barrel brew. 5/10

TOTAL SCORE: 28/50

On tap at hopaholic. Clear amber colour with a small microfoam. Nose of slight barrel aged whiskey with some booze. Taste is low to medium sweetness with distinct vanilla from the barrel.

Draught (taster) at Bar Americain in NYC on 17-Mar-2016. Clear dark amber colour with a thin tan coloured head. Aroma of malt, caramel and I do get some (faint) bourbon and spices. Full body and soft/medium carbonation. Sweet flavour of malt, butterscotch and caramel. Some wood and vanilla. Not bad but tough to drink quickly.

Meh. This beer tastes like Michelob Dark with some sort of bourbon syrup added to it. I seriously doubt it spent more than 30 seconds inside of a bourbon barrel, which would fit its deScription of "up to six weeks" now wouldn’t it?
