Snifter at Timothy O’Toole’s during Chicago Craft Beer Week. Clearly I’m showing more love for this than most raters; maybe coming from a tap helps? Golden bourbon color: the brewmaster really picked his grains well. A thin ring of foam with a scrum of bubbles in the center. The smell is bourbon and branch, a moderate amount of alcohol. The taste carries through with that smooth Kentucky bourbon impression. Limited bittering, just enough to stay out of the way. Impression is right between sippin’ and slurpin;. Besides, this was just $5.50, great price for a Streeterville bar.

12oz bottle, shared by Dan from work. Thanks. Pours a clear, light amber color with a thin white head. Aroma is boozy, bourbon, vanilla. Medium on the palate with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, caramel, vanilla, oak, light bourbon, a little nutty, with a sweet, boozy finish. This is reminiscent of some bourbon barrel barleywines, but toned down a few notches. A little underwhelming for me, but not bad.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Rating from 2010: Great Vanilla-nose, slightly sweet. The beer starts very smooth, no alcohol at first sight. The smooth, slightly malty vanilla bourbon aroma with hints of oak continue to the mainpart and rest very long in the end. Extremely smooth, not too sweet. The flavours harmonate great and round. The slightly woody note stays smooth and vanilla-like very long in the mouth. A really great beer! --> 14/13/14/14

Tap at Grill Next Door. Pours a nice clear amber with a lacy white head. Aroma of pencil eraser, vanilla. Flavor is a caramel malt forward amber with some bourbon notes. A bit thin, but better than it’s ratings here would indicate.

Bottle, thanks sevenhokie! Bourbon aroma up front followed by notes of vanilla and oak. Pours clear copper colored with a thin white head and very good lacing. Good, smooth bourbon flavor with a good bit of vanilla. Finishes smooth with the oak coming through and just a bit of booze. Good, warming beer for cold days.

Super great bourbon ale. Not what I expected but in good way. Thin and light with a warming affect for those cold winters nights. Exception. A must for a relaxing ale.

12oz into a stemmed boulevard glass, pours a nice orange/copper mix, head a small and nicely coushioned and rings the glass wiht sproadic islands. Aroma is boozy, bourbon, rye, whiskey, vanilla, some ripe cherry and cough syrup. Taste is more whiskey, vanilla, oak/cedar and lush apples and berries. Abv is noticeable but does not subtract from the enjoyment. Its a smooth drinker with the bourbon leading the way down the hatch, there is also a sweetness in the aftertaste reminiscant of sweet rasins and licorice. Im curioius to try just the kentucky ale to really see where this is develped from. A nice sipper, but goes down faster than one would think as the drinkability is very fluid.

This here really is an interesting beer. Basically a learning sessions as to how barrel aging effects beer. Poured a dark red to brown with a beige head. Aroma was of lots of bourbon, oak, vanilla, dark fruits and caramel. Flavor was similar, sweet bourbon, and mild english strong notes in the back. Solid offering..

Draft. Pours very clear copper/light brown with a thin white head. Tastes sweet and buttery, smooth, like rum, bourbon, and butterscotch. Low/medium body and low carbonation. Smells sweet, creamy, sugary, and like alcohol.
