3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle. Nice looking orange-red-amber pour; almost-fizzy eggshell head becomes a sparse covering; no lacing. Aroma oak, caramel, malt sugar, alcohol--not bad. Rather falls apart in the flavor; sharp, uncharacteristic bitterness, cheap bourbon flavor; finish is excessively astringent, and there are plenty of quality 10% brews that hide it much better than this. Medium-thin, almost frothy body. Not as bad as the first 20 raters suggest, but there’s much better out there.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 11/20
Clear amber coloured body with hints of ruby and bronze and a nice, two centimetre tall thick tan head - not too shabby. Aroma of alcohol, bourbon, vanilla, oak, pit fruits, raisins and a bit of light hops - once again, not a bad nose, and surely not as pungent as others nor complex, but not bad at all. Full-bodied; Strong effervescence at first with a big grain of malt and alcohol noticeable and a ridiculous alcohol burn and no real flavours after that - some bourbon and wood, but no sweetness, no spice, no caramel, no malt and definitely no complexity. Aftertaste shows just about the same - alcohol and the faintest hit of bourbon. Overall, a good enough smelling and looking beer, but this is almost a feat in itself to make a beer with this much alcohol and theoretically (who really knows) aged in bourbon barrels and still get absolutely NO flavour out of the beer, or leave anything on the palate except for a warmed stomach. Seriously, this isn’t a horrible beer of course, but a lesson in barley wines to show how they can exist without good or bad flavours, but no flavour at all - because before this, I didn’t think this could happen with a beer having so much alcohol and theoretically a large malt bill. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Alexandria (Old Town), Virginia on 28-November-2014 for US$3,49 sampled at home in Washington on 16-December-2014.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Below average. No noticeable aroma, which I was surprised since this was on tap. The soft caramel color was the best thing about it. Lightweight and watery body. Flimsy and thin. Bourbon flavor up front like most of their beers with a sweet background. Some hops presence but more boozy.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark brown amber color with small off-white head and little oily lacing. Aroma and flavor have big robust bourbon, caramel malts, and light sweet candy syrup. Slight bitterness with moderate alcohol burn. Very simple and clean. Not that bad for the price- there aren’t many BBA Barley Wines out there.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle from ABC. Pours a dark brown with a medium, frothy off-white head that sticks around. Strong malt aroma; toffee, bread, straw, and maybe some doughy yeast here as well. Taste is boozy throughout, especially on the finish. Full bodied and syrupy throughout. Not the best barley wine I've had, but a decent one nonetheless. Acquire.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Where and how: bottle 355 ml
Aroma promising nose. Solid, balanced, not overpowered feel of Bourbon cask. Mature malt approach. Refined barley wine.
Top: medium-lighter, lasting white top.
Base: amber with hint of brown.
Palate : mid bodied, tad too thin for barley wine.
Taste: very nice barrel feel, mild vanilla, cola, Bourbon. Easy going semi sipper..
Other notes more of barrel aged strong ale than BW. Solid.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
12 oz. bottle from Dutch’s. Pours a clear reddish-amber with a small off-white head that lasts only as a ring and spotty film. Aroma of vanilla, toffee, dried berries, oak, dried grains, booze, and an odd medicinal note. Flavor of oak, toffee, dry grains, leaves, booze, dried fruits, and that same odd medicinal note. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a medicinal, sweet, thin, kind of chemical mouthfeel. Pretty weak for the style.
