3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
7/12/2013: Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout... I love beer and a I love bourbon and believe that the two can go well together, if done right. However, I have never really liked the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale since the bourbon just completely overwhelmed the weak, insubstantial base beer. Regardless, I decided to give the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout a try to see if they were able to find a better balance between the bourbon and a stout base beer. We shall see soon, but Iím already having some reservations about this beer since the carbonation seemed to bubble and fizz away on the initial pour leaving a dull, dark brown liquid with no bubbles or head whatsoever. The aroma is more coffee than anything else and masks any bourbon that might be there; there is just a hint of vanilla. The flavor is mostly coffee as well up front with some vanilla, dark chocolate, cherry, and barrel char; the bourbon is much more subdued in this brew (unlike the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale), although this beer drinks more like a cup of coffee spiked with some bourbon. The accompanying flavors are good, but have a difficult time cutting through all of the coffee. Also, there is very little, if any, carbonation trapped in the actual beer, so it seems a bit flat on the palatte. Iím afraid the carbonation was like a flash in the glass from the pour which is too bad as it probably would have helped to open up the flavor to allow the complexity of this beer and the licorice, cherry chocolate, vanilla, bread crust and flavors come through the coffee a bit more. It would have also probably helped the body and mouthfeel of this beer is it seems a bit thin. I do like the barrel char that seems to run throughout the flavor profile though. Overall, I like this better than their regular Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, but I wonder what it would have been like if they had left out the overbearing coffee and just done a plain bourbon barrel stout...
12 fl. oz. bottle (ALC/VOL 8.0%) from The Party Source in Bellevue, KY. Rating #56 for this beer.

Draft from notes. Pours almost black with a half finger of dark brown head. Aroma is oaky bourbon with coffee and dark chocolate. Taste is light bitter and follows aroma. The alcohol is very welk hidden. Awesome beer, very enjoyable

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark reddish-brown and opaque with very little head. Nose of dark-roasted coffee and syrup. Mildly-carbonated with a thin, watered-down syrup mouthfeel, and a cooked brown sugar, coffee concentrate, black licorice, dry finish with some elements of bourbon.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark brown color with a slight head. Scent is a little malty with hints of bourbon. Texture is thin for a stout but delivers a unique flavor. Quite a bit different than you would expect. Pretty good overall.

The bourbon flavor so strong in their ale was almost missing. Since Iím not a big bourbon fan that was fine with me. Thereís roasted coffee and a warm woody after-taste.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
The barrel-aged flavors native to Kentucky compliment this complex stout brewed and aged with Haitian coffee to create this wonderful Bourbon Barrel Stout.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 ounce bottle. Pours a darker brown to black with little head. Looks a little watery even. Aroma has stronger coffee influence than anything else. Maybe a touch of vanilla comes through as well. In the taste, I get a strong vanilla and wet wood presence on top of a subdued coffee. Fairly sweet. Thick and sticky mouthfeel.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
(draft @ Lizardville - Bedford Heights, OH) Dark black pour with a thick tan head. Huge roasted malt aroma with coffee and chocolate and a really sweet and prevalent bourbon note. Flavor is much the same. Roasted malts, sweet chocolate and malts with a sweet and smooth bourbon finish to it.
