Carefully crafted by Alltech’s master brewers, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout® builds on the success of its barrel-aged brother, the beloved Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale®. Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout is brewed and aged with Alltech® Café Citadelle Haitian coffee and aged in world-famous Kentucky bourbon barrels. The result is a complex stout with dark-roasted malts, hints of caramel and vanilla and a lightly roasted coffee finish.

Poured cola dark brown with a frothy beige head. Aroma of dark chocolate, dark fruit and roast malt, light ashtray. Medium body, flavour is vanilla smoothness, chocolate, mildly roasted malt.

Pours an almost black color with tan head. Some caramel and roasted malt on the nose with just the slighted hints of coffee and bourbon; follows onto the palate. Finishes sweet, pretty sweet for this type of brew.

bottle @ friends. Appearance: pours dark brown with medium off-white head with good lacing. Aroma/taste: caramel, coffee, whisky, oak and vanilla, Palate: low to average carbonation, medium body, distinct caramel sweetness, low to medium bitterness, medium duration and an oily texture. Overall: quite decent brown stout

Appearance: near black into a snifter, with one finger of creamy medium tan head and no lacing. Aroma: chocolate and light coffee, underpinned by the expected boozy note. Taste: smooth bittersweet dark chocolate, vanilla, roast coffee, black bread, caramel, toffee, light raisin, definite bourbon base. Finish: lasting sweet vanilla and bourbon, without any alcohol heat, Notes: Gift from Clem at work. Expected it to be a soulless, corporate bourbon barrel "stout". It was pleasantly restrained, and had far more character than I expected, buoyed by a palate that was surprisingly nuanced and light enough to enable true enjoyment.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown-black with very faint garnet-red highlights. Head is beige, fine-grained, creamy, and throws a little lace. Nose is a little odd; beef bouillon, burnt coffee, roasted mushrooms, and a very light trace of maple sugar. On the tongue, the bourbon punch hits first, then the coffee kicks in; neither is overly strong, and both are nicely balanced; there is, however, a spicy element that, while not unpleasant, is a little out of place. it almost puts me in mind of jerk seasoning or really spicy cinnamon. Mouthfeel is rich and creamy, finish is long, rich, and boozy. Definitely a little different than the average BBAIS -- what I’m not sure about is whether different is, in this case, a detriment or a credit. Certainly intriguing, though.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2015 pours dark-chocolate brown-black with a fine veil of warm crema head. Fades to nothing immediately, but oily rings and patterns of residual bubbles can still be found for a while. Aroma is strong very-dark chocolate (the artisan, high-cocao stuff.) Light mineral, but combined with the chocolate, it is pleasant. More cocoa, holey moley! Hint of grass, bbq, and smoke. In the flavor, the smoked wood really comes out, minimal vanilla though, given its a bourbon barrel, moderate BBQ, hint of molasses, chocolate is surprisingly subdued given its dominance of the aroma. Roasty. Body is medium, bit on the oily side, with hot, prickly carbonation. Overall, a very dark tasting stout, with subtle bits of smoke and very little usual bourbon vanilla. Its underrated, but still not as quaffable as the usual, vanilla-bomb bourbon barrel beers, in my opinion.

Poured from a bottle purchased November 2012 into a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout snifter darkest brown with minimal head. Aroma is light coffee faint bourbon. Flavor is stronger coffee almost no bourbon a touch of vanilla. Highly carbonated (still) Balanced but watery for a stout.

A great stout from the get-go. One poured it had a wonderful balanced aroma of expresso and bourbon. Nice and dark appearance. Good mouth feel even if it was thin. Great combination of being sweet and dry/bitter. They didn’t over board with a strong coffee flavor and added just a hint of bourbon that wasn’t over powering. It did seem a little watered down. This has to be one of my favorite stouts.

New Beer Distributors, NYC 12 ounce ($4): Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is espresso, vanilla, sugar, and a bit of bourbon. This is barrel-aged, but nothing compared to what the crazier more artisanal breweries are doing. That said, what we are left with here is a pleasant a drinkable imperial stout. It is well balanced enough, not being too sweet or particularly bitter. Pretty good.
