Barrels that once contained world-famous Kentucky Bourbon lend a sweet hint of caramel and vanilla to dark-roasted malts and finish with the essence of a lightly roasted coffee. The barrel-aged flavors native to Kentucky compliment this complex stout brewed and aged with Haitian coffee to create the bourbon country’s own Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout.

12oz bottle into a snifter. Pours jet black with a thin tan head. A decent sized ring is left around the edge of the glass on top of the beer. Coffee is very prominent on the aroma with a lot of roast and caramel along with a healthy dose of chocolate which surprised me a little bit. A somewhat subdued vanilla not but I can’t really detect much bourbon. Nonetheless a very inviting aroma. The flavor has lots of coffee and caramel up front but not in as strong of dose as is present in the aroma. Almost no bourbon at all but rather vanilla, chocolate and caramel. All of the flavors are a little bit thin but they work well together. Roast and char lingers long after the other flavors have cleared up. Mouthfeel is quite thin for the style with a light bitterness and a lingering stickiness. Overall, a good coffee stout but not on par with Founders Breakfast Stout and roughly the same price. If this becomes available in TN I will gladly pick it up because of no alternatives. In other parts of the country, however, there are better alternatives.

Pours deep reddish mahogany with a small tan head. Smells of coffee and hints of vanilla. Taste is bourbon vanilla sweetness with a touch of coffee underneath. Full-bodied with a slick texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout finishes with a lingering, cloying syrupy sweetness.

The pour looked opaque, black, and imposing in the tulip glass. The head formed to a one finger thick at first, but dies down rapidly, and the beer looked quite still thereafter. The aroma was quite tame for a beer of this gravity and complex construction. I could detect a hint of vanilla, and some oak and coffee, but it was a rather mild smell. The taste was dominated by coffee, followed by some toffee and chocolate. The oak and vanilla were quite a bit more subdued than many other similarly aged beers. There was a faint hint of cherry in the finish. The body was much thinner than a typical stout, and the beer felt way less potent than it was. The aftertaste was a lingering vanilla note. It was an enjoyable beer, but I would have liked to seen more oak influences show up.

Draft. Aroma is dark malt. No bourbon that I noticed. Appearance is black with little tan head. Taste is dark malt with some bourbon. Palate is dry and dark. Overall, a decent stout. It needs more bourbon, though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: Thanks, Mike. Deep brown-ish color, a khaki head dissipates quickly to a foamy collar. Aroma is super buttery... Diacetyl overload, anyone? Mild toffee, hint of some sweet milk chocolates, I guess. Bourbon barrel? Uhh... Taste, unfortunately, does not get any better. Tons of buttery off-flavor with only minor hints of "stout" underneath... Touch of milky cocoa. Quite astringent in the finish, possibly the only indication of a barrel, here. No bourbon or woody flavors otherwise. A pretty poorly put together stout.

Bottle 12fl.oz.

Clear dark black brown color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, beige head. Aroma is light heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, dusty malt, toffee, vanilla, artificial. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, chocolate, coffee, dark roasted. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20130814]

A very nice stout. Dark cola-like pour with a rocky thick off-white head, that leaves good lacing. Nice roasted malts in the nose. Decent mouthfeel, smooth, not overly carbonated. Good stout flavor, roasted coffee, wood, and a bit of bourbon ... nicely done!

Dark brown pour with a tan head. Chocolate, toffee, and coffee beans on the nose. Little bit of toasted oak and roasted malt flavours. Very well balanced. Complex finish, coco and vanilla bean.

Black pour with a small tan head. Aroma of char, roast, burnt sugar, caramel, a little earth and vanilla. Flavor is char, chocolate, sweet caramel, burnt grains, and odd sort of sour note, light metal, earth and as it warms light fusel notes. Light body, oily entry, medium carbonation and a finish that is dry with a sort of charcoal feel on the palate. I didn’t really like this one as far as Imperial Stouts, but overall it is not too bad. Way too much char taste though, and I like a little char in my Stouts.

Black with a nice solid tan head. Aroma of roast and chocolate, with a smokey note. Taste has lots of chocolate and vanilla, with dry roast and wood making an appearance once beer warms a bit. Palate dry and roasty, with a warming feeling.
