Kentucky Pumpkin Barrel Ale is a barrel-aged ale brewed with Kentucky-sourced pumpkin, richly spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. As the ale is aged in fresh bourbon barrels, the sweetness of caramel and vanilla are imparted upon the brew and complement its spicier base. At 10 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), this robust, limited release seasonal makes for a flavorful sipping beer to slowly warm up with as the weather cools. Some retailers will be offering collectible jack-o-latern snifters along with the ale.

Tap sample. Poured clear orange color with an average white frothy head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Soft doughy pumpkin and small woody alcohol aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium soft bourbon sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Soft for style.

12 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse. Pours a clear copper with a thin white head. Fair head retention. Aroma of pumpkin, vanilla, bourbon, spice, hints of stone fruit. The taste is pumpkin, spice, vanilla, bourbon, pale malt. Faint bitterness. Medium bodied.

Sample at Pint House, brown sugar rimmed glass. Pours a clear orange color with a medium thin off-white head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of pumpkins and slight oak. Medium-bodied with flavors of sweet pumpkin spice, oaky vanilla and slight hops. The finish is sweet with a pumpkin and cinnamon aftertaste. Tastes exactly like the Bourbon Barrel Ale with pumpkin thrown in, but decent nonetheless.

Bottle. Nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin and caramel malt aroma with a hint of bourbon. Golden yellow with small head. Sweet cinnamon, orange/pumpkin malt flavor with a light alcohol finish. Decent - a bit light and boozy.

Draft. Amber pour. Smell of booze and pumpkin pie. The flavor is just wretched here. Feels like bourbon was dumped into the beer, harsh and boozy, pumpkin spice vomit, ipecac and sweetness.

Bottled. Poured clear, light golden with a short cap of white head. The aroma picked up lots of sweet pumpkin meat, vanilla, nutmeg, and bourbon.. kind of a rough bourbon bite on the back of the nose.. still smelled sticky, sweet, pie-like, and delicious, though. The flavor found tart oak and medicinal notes on the tip of the tongue, with sweet bourbon and hefty doses of nutmeg, cardamom, and cinnamon following.. pale malts and more bourbon at the core.. tangy and dry on the back-end, leaving some belly warmth. Medium-bodied and dry on the palate.. tangy from the barrel.. there just wasn’t enough pumpkin-y base beer for it to be great.

12 oz. bottle from Dutch’s. Pours a totally clear orange-hued gold with a small white head. Buttery aroma of vanilla, butterscotch, spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice), and bourbon warmth at the end. Very sweet nose. Flavor of vanilla, bourbon, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, and toasted sugar- not a lot of pumpkin. Light-bodied, with a sweet, warm, mildly spicy, and dry mouthfeel and moderate to medium carbonation. Not much body to this one; could be better.

12oz bottle. Totally clear golden orange color. Thin somewhat bubbly white head. Fades to a minimal amount quickly. Some loose bits of lace. Very nice deep pumpkin and bourbon in the nose. Bigger body. Soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Nice pumpkin pie, spice, and light bourbon in the flavor. Taste is moderate sweet, with alcohol warmth, and a lot of spice. As it warms up, booze is much more pronounced than in similar beers. Also, the body is not nearly as full as other 8.5%+ pumpkin beers, texture is maybe a little watery. Gets kind of hot even, towards the end, really. Pumpkin and bourbon aroma was nice, but this is just too damn rough to pull it off.

Bottle:   Faint but definite bourbon notes on the nose, touch of caramel, with light spices.   Smooth on the tongue, moderately spiced up front, all the good bits, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice.   Faintn touch of clove.   Warming, but can’t tell this is 10%.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Barrel aging takes over towards the backside.   Lingering bourbon and caramel, albeit soft.   Better than I expected.   This one was tasty.
