In bringing together artisans from disparate aural planes, one might expect an offbeat, feedback-warped cacophony, shrill to the point of unlistenable. Yet, by inviting Kyle Hollingsworth, keyboardist for eclectic, jam-prone sextet, The String Cheese Incident, and Keri Kelli, wailing rock guitarist of Alice Cooper fame, we were able to make truly beautiful music. Turns out, these musicians have a great deal in common, both with each other and with Stone. We all enjoy turning things up to 11, and that is represented in this collaborative offering, an imperial India pale ale ably backed by Nugget, Comet and Calypso hops, and amplified care of a healthy dry-hopping with Vic’s Secret, a new Australian hop, adding citrus and tropical fruit oomph. To give this modern masterpiece some soulful, classic character, we traced the roots of brewing to the days when Old World herbs were used to spice beers, adding in coriander and, a first for us, elderberries. To stand up to that sumptuous spice and blaring bitterness, we added golden naked oats, which are lightly roasted and add body and enhanced mouthfeel to the brew like a steady, unbreakable backbeat to an incendiary jam solo. Sit back, crank the volume and get lost in this operatic incarnation of genres combined in the name of invention.

Big IPA, with plenty of a malt backbone to calm but not distinguish the hop flavour and aroma. Some spiciness which added a nice dimension to the beer.

Draft at Frisco Taphouse & Brewery, Columbia, MD. Served in a Trappist glass. Arrived at the table a hazy copper color with a small khaki head. The aroma featured some caramel, vanilla, a woodsy quality, and plenty of spiciness. Went down relatively full-bodied and kinda sticky. The taste was all caramel and vanilla upfront with the slightest kick of tangy citrus at the tail-end. Lots of spice and a big boozy quality throughout. Quality - but not too memorable.

Bomber. Pours a amber orange color, white head. aroma is mix of muted hops and spice. Taste is hoppy, spicey, a bit wierd if you ask me. I don’t know if the coriander and berries do anything for it.

Pours a clear orange-amber into the glass, with a nice two-finger eggshell foam head that retains chunky lacing. The nose has dank hops, basement aromas, light fruitiness and a spruce-Pine note. Flavors do indeed show a berry note, and it enhances the grapefruit and tangerine/stone fruits already at work. Some pale malts and crackers hit mid-palate, as the finish is a perfect, lingering pine-Sap slathering peppered bitter. The palate is just exquisite. It is complex for days, yet the soft carbonation, medium body, almost creamy mouthfeel, substantive flavors and a perfectly hidden alcohol come together to provide a perfect quaff. I love how all of the extra fruit contingencies just enhance (not take over) a wonderfully put-together IPA. Superior brew!
