From notes. First reviewed 9/22/2011. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip.
Class V Stout is a molasses coffee black color with a creamy tan head. A little bit of lace is left and the head relaxes to a ring as the glass progresses.
Lots of dark chocolate and chocolate malt. Roasted malt comes in right behind. Very good, but very simple.
The flavor follows the nose. Tons of dark chocolate and chocolate malt. This creates a complexity in the chocolate flavor. Sweet, bitter, and smooth. A little bit of coffee comes in at the end.
A little bit of booze on the tongue. Mostly sticky and sweet, but there is an evening bitterness toward the end of each sip. Full bodied with tightly wound creamy carbonation.
The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I really enjoyed this.

A - Pours a very dark black with just a hint of brown and a half-finger of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades fairly quickly leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is full of roasted chocolate and some coffee with some earthy hops and a touch of citrus with a touch of sweetness.
T - Starts off with some roasted lightly bitter chocolate malts with some coffee and a touch of earthy hop. Through the middle, some sweeter milk chocolate comes through with a touch of citrus hop flavor. The finish is a mix of chocolate malts, some coffee, a bit of sweetness, and a touch of earthy hops that linger together.
M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Very smooth with a dry roasted finish.
D - Very drinkable. Really excellent balance of stout flavors. The chocolate is nice and rich but not overpowering and the body is spot on.

Pours black but looks thin. Small brown head. Nose is black licorice and chocolate with a hunt of dry grass and coffee. Flavor is sweet with great bitter balance to keep a biter finish. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a long lingering aftertaste.

Dark bittersweet chocolate, roast, dark fruit, and caramel. Pours black, tan brown head. Lasting with good lace. The flavor is a nice mixture of dark bittersweet chocolate, roasted patent malts, caramel and dark fruit with a nice earthy dry bitterness rounding out the finish. Smooth and full bodied bordering on imperial in my opinion.

Bottle sampled during the Coldest Day of the Year Stout Tasting on 1/21/12. Pours darkest brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of dark fruit (plum, raisin), roast and chocolate. Flavor also starts with dark fruit, but blackberry this time. Then it moves to chocolate and roasted malt before a semi-boozy finish.
