COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As the Kernville temps dip our spicy rye Holiday Ale warms up the taps. It gets its kick from rye but has plenty of Magnum and Columbus hops to balance out the malt.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Poured a dark tea brown color while a delicate layer of average sized head had developed on top. My nose doesnít really pick up a lot of aroma other than a subtle blend of green hops and pine but other than that not much happening. The flavor is smooth with a refined palate, but the flavor seems hollow with the only taste being some overly bitter green hops with a squirt of citrus. The malts are heavily drowned out by the hops but I want to say I taste a faint background of maple syrup. This is a really good beer and surprisingly, a holiday that emphasized the usage of hops.

Draft. Amber-brown beer with a big cream colored head. Nice pine and grapefruit aroma. Pine and grapefruit flavor with caramel and light earth. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Caramel and pine lingers with grapefruit and light earth.

Growler thanks to good olí Craig. Hazy chestnut brown with a small off-white head that fades to swirls. The aroma has lots of rye evident, spices, and earthy and piney hops. Pretty nice. The flavor is rather rye-forward and hoppy, with pine and citrus, slight spiced notes, and considerable earthiness. Dry and fairly crisp on the mouthfeel with medium-plus body and average carbonation. A pretty well-done rye ale overall, but not near the level of Just Outstanding.

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2011 Sample at the brewpub. Pours a clear mahogany color with a medium light beige head that burns away steadily. Stringy lacing. Sweet spices and malt in the nose. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, grapefruit and spice. The finish is malty with a short spiced aftertaste. Decent overall.

22oa bottle. Pours deep amber with a small off white head. Light floral hop notes in the nose, watery finish. Not sure what happened here, the only lame beer Iíve tried from Kern.

Tap at OíBriens. Wasnít a fan of this - in fact I didnít finish it. Faint spicy nose. Spicy and not too hoppy even though itís listed as a Rye IPA. Maybe not the best condition? Didnít do anything or go anywhere. Very Ho Hum.

On tap (no vintage labeled) at Blue Palms. Pours with a light brown body and an off-white head. Aroma is hoppy. Citrus, dryness, and dirt are the main characteristics. Flavors are citrus hoppy, earthy, caramel, bitter with lively bubbles. Okay, but I donít see anything holiday or interesting about it.

Bottle... Dark, mostly clear, copper ale with a large, frothy, off-white head. Great, but not permanent, retention leaves an interesting ring of weeping lacework. The bouquet offers spicy grains and spicy, piney, fruity hops. Full-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and prickly carbonation. The spicy, toasty flavor presents bitter hops and a marriage of flavorful rye and barley malts. Finishes bitter, coarse and dry.

Appearance: Pours a deep dark amber with a froth white cap. Aroma: Big citrus hop nose, earthy chocolatey malt. Taste: Earthy savory malt, citrusy and piny hops. Mouthfeel: Creamy, average carbonation. Overall: Really tasty.
