Keserű Mz meaning Bitter Honey, inspired by the infamous Polanski-movie, Bitter Moon is a strong, unfiltered, unpasteurized lager from the Ft Brewery. It is bright yellow and opaque, with a thick white head. Its bisquity, floral-honey sweetness, and its fruitiness resembling melon and mango are all work to hide the brutal bitterness of German hops Spalter and Magnum.

Keserű Mz is a genuine specialty from Ft north of Budapest and the first great surprise of the Hungarian Craft-Beer Revolution, kickstarted by the First Hungarian Craft Beer Festival, Főzdefeszt in May 2011. It is an experimental beer, said to create a new beer-style, called HopLager. HopLager is a triple-hopped, strong lager beer Hungarys answer to American Pale Ale.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Naamas place. Thanks Naama. Clear golden with a white head. Aroma is a bit oxidized with grains, honey, floral hints, a bit of fruitiness and some stale hops. Sweetish flavor with honey, malt, a bit of alcohol, fruity notes and a bitter and herbal finish. Medium-bodied, a bit alcoholic. A bit too heavy and alcoholic.

300ml draught and later a 500ml bottle, 6.0% abv, both at and from Cheers Drinkbar. At the bar the beer was presented as an IPA. Cool label design to the bottled version. Fluffy white head, unclear golden body, fragile lacing. Fresh fruity aroma, lightly spiced. The flavour is also very fresh with fruity hops bringing hints of grapefruits and oranges and hints of smooth honey sweetness. Mild bitter citrus shells to the finish. Soft in the mouth. Very pleasing (Budapest, 31.07.2012).

50 cl bottle @ Gastropub Tuulensuu.
Pours hazy golden color with a small head. Dull malty and cardboard-y aroma, some grain also. Sweet malty flavor grain, caramel and toffee notes very weird, might be a bit out of date.

draft at Szimpla Kert in Budapest. so its all German hops, alright, but understand that it uses so much that it smells and tastes like an American made it. dont get me wrong, its a tremendous aroma, but its very brutish and harsh given the spiced character of the Spalter and strong pungency of the Magnum. and it does reach a level I would call excess, though an uncharacteristic juiciness and resin quality show up. and after all that... its fucking beautiful. my nose is drowning in its pungent must. theres quite a strong cheese note, its insanely bitter and unbalanced but its fascinating. im sure if all pilsner or IPA were made like this where I live, Id be sick of it in only a few weeks, but for me this one definitely gets kudos for being different and foreign to me.
