Keserű Mz meaning Bitter Honey, inspired by the infamous Polanski-movie, Bitter Moon is a strong, unfiltered, unpasteurized lager from the Ft Brewery. It is bright yellow and opaque, with a thick white head. Its bisquity, floral-honey sweetness, and its fruitiness resembling melon and mango are all work to hide the brutal bitterness of German hops Spalter and Magnum.

Keserű Mz is a genuine specialty from Ft north of Budapest and the first great surprise of the Hungarian Craft-Beer Revolution, kickstarted by the First Hungarian Craft Beer Festival, Főzdefeszt in May 2011. It is an experimental beer, said to create a new beer-style, called HopLager. HopLager is a triple-hopped, strong lager beer Hungarys answer to American Pale Ale.

Bottle. Hazy deep golden body, medium creamy off-white head. Nose is corn flakes, cereals, hints of grass. Grainy cerealy malts, hints of grass. Medium body and carbonation. Kinda like a homebrew from the countryside, but OK.

Bottle at America Strikes Back, Ulfborg. Pours cloudy amber with small white head. Clear aroma of fruit and yeast, with notes of malt and some sweetener. Bitter, hoppy flavour, with unpleasant sharp notes and touches of malt. Bitter aftertaste. Unbalanced and poor.

Courtesy of tonycaviar at the F-Fest, thanks! Lovely opaque yellow-golden body, white head. Sweet malty, somewhat husky nose. Yoghurty bitterish husky taste. Some nice funkiness I generally associate with lambics, but it shouldnt be off. Not thrilled, but Id go for it again, certainly quite different than most!

50cl bottle from Cunningham. Pours hazy golden with a small, white head. Fruity aroma with sour apples, yeast and hints of grass and honey. Feels a bit like homebrewed cider, more like fermented green apples than beer. Slightlyly sour with a moderate sweetness and a fairly decent bitterness in the finish. Some of the strong pale lager aromas shine through too, but all in all more interesting than nice. Feels a bit homemade, quite strange but drinkable. (BB Sept. 2013)

Bottle: Aroma is light malty, grassy and light herbal hops. Very hazy, yellow color and a foamy white head. Flavor is malty, light sweetness, notes of honey, intensive, light grassy hops. Also citrus hops. Medium bitterness in the end. Pleasant.

Draft from a Foti Brewery stand at the Budapest Easter Market. Hazy golden yellow, foamy white head. Bitter -sweet honey, robust and tangy. Dry-sweet, whieat and sunflower. Great balance, big flavor, a little sour. very micro and tasty. very bitter hopping, which is terrific over the sweet honey and wheat.

500ml swing-top bottle from Csak a J Sr - Only Good Beer in Budapest. Pours a hazed golden colored body with a finger-width, frothy and creamy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is floral with a slight honey sweetness, a touch of DMS, oxidized cardboard, a bit of an herbal spice, and some bread. Flavor is better. Creamy pale malts with a slight honey sweetness, a light grass and herbal spice, some yeast, a good amount of florals, and a light bready note. Finishes clean and creamy with a light floral bitterness. Medium length aftertaste following a medium-light, soft body and a creamy, medium carbonation. Overall, the aroma wasnt very good, but the flavor had a nice creaminess and floral bitterness without any of the off-flavors showing up. Not bad.

In bottle, thanks Sev. Pours a blonde colour with a decent white head. Aroma of honey, black pepper, musty yeast, caramel and alcohol. Similar flavours with mild carbonation and an oily mouth-feel.

500ml Bottle from the brand new Liquid Drink Bar in Budapest. First sip brings out luscious creamy cheesecake flavours that hint at mango, peach and citrusy notes. Certainly an intriguing beer that balances out its floral elements in the second glass with a slightly bitter undertone. Dont know if I could drink too many of these in one sitting, but no doubt lovely with a desert.
