COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
„Keserű Méz” – meaning Bitter Honey, inspired by the infamous Polanski-movie, Bitter Moon – is a strong, unfiltered, unpasteurized lager from the Fót Brewery. It is bright yellow and opaque, with a thick white head. It’s bisquity, floral-honey sweetness, and its fruitiness resembling melon and mango are all work to hide the brutal bitterness of German hops – Spalter and Magnum.

„Keserű Méz” is a genuine specialty from Fót – north of Budapest – and the first great surprise of the Hungarian Craft-Beer Revolution, kickstarted by the First Hungarian Craft Beer Festival, Főzdefeszt in May 2011. It is an experimental beer, said to create a new beer-style, called HopLager. HopLager is a triple-hopped, strong lager beer – Hungary’s answer to American Pale Ale.

A barátom unszolására próbáltam ki és bár nem kedvelem az efféle erős ízeket és alkoholfokot, ez nagyon ízlett! Alkalmanként szívesen iszom azóta is!

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2013 Tap @ Csak a jo Sör, Budapest 24/08/11. Pours cloudy golden with a large head that doesn’t recede easily. Aroma is... hops. They’re not kidding about the massive mountains of Spalter hops. Grassiness and herbal hopping rules the aroma. The same with the flavor though you can detect some cereal maltiness behind it all. Palate is stingy, dry, carbonated. An excellent lager. Would love to drink pints and pints of it, especially at the weathers during the trip in August 2011.

Bottle from Hungary courtesy of my friend Laszlo! Cheers! Pours a golden yellow, fairly cloudy, massive white head, very fizzy. Aroma: Very hoppy and spicy. Hints of banana, coriander, nutmeg. Palate: medium bodied, very very creamy and smooth start, almost syrupy. It then rapidly moves to a spicy dry finish. Taste: starts off sweet, very quickly becomes bitter as it gets dry. The aftertaste is long and lingering, but becomes sweeter in the end. A very interesting beer.

draft at Szimpla Kert in Budapest. so it’s all German hops, alright, but understand that it uses so much that it smells and tastes like an American made it. don’t get me wrong, it’s a tremendous aroma, but it’s very brutish and harsh given the spiced character of the Spalter and strong pungency of the Magnum. and it does reach a level I would call excess, though an uncharacteristic juiciness and resin quality show up. and after all that... it’s fucking beautiful. my nose is drowning in it’s pungent must. there’s quite a strong cheese note, it’s insanely bitter and unbalanced but it’s fascinating. i’m sure if all pilsner or IPA were made like this where I live, I’d be sick of it in only a few weeks, but for me this one definitely gets kudos for being different and foreign to me.

Unfiltered, hazy, light orange colour, like weizen, big white head, fizzy. Unpasteurized lager.
Taste and palate is very herbal and full of hops, mild bitter citrus shells, it is easily drinkable, higher alcohol content, but very noticeable. Medium bodied and carbonated.
Pleasure! A good Hungarian beer.
