COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
„Keserű Méz” – meaning Bitter Honey, inspired by the infamous Polanski-movie, Bitter Moon – is a strong, unfiltered, unpasteurized lager from the Fót Brewery. It is bright yellow and opaque, with a thick white head. It’s bisquity, floral-honey sweetness, and its fruitiness resembling melon and mango are all work to hide the brutal bitterness of German hops – Spalter and Magnum.

„Keserű Méz” is a genuine specialty from Fót – north of Budapest – and the first great surprise of the Hungarian Craft-Beer Revolution, kickstarted by the First Hungarian Craft Beer Festival, Főzdefeszt in May 2011. It is an experimental beer, said to create a new beer-style, called HopLager. HopLager is a triple-hopped, strong lager beer – Hungary’s answer to American Pale Ale.

Bottle from Hungary courtesy of my friend Laszlo! Cheers! Pours a golden yellow, fairly cloudy, massive white head, very fizzy. Aroma: Very hoppy and spicy. Hints of banana, coriander, nutmeg. Palate: medium bodied, very very creamy and smooth start, almost syrupy. It then rapidly moves to a spicy dry finish. Taste: starts off sweet, very quickly becomes bitter as it gets dry. The aftertaste is long and lingering, but becomes sweeter in the end. A very interesting beer.

500ml swing-top bottle from Csak a Jó Sör - Only Good Beer in Budapest. Pours a hazed golden colored body with a finger-width, frothy and creamy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is floral with a slight honey sweetness, a touch of DMS, oxidized cardboard, a bit of an herbal spice, and some bread. Flavor is better. Creamy pale malts with a slight honey sweetness, a light grass and herbal spice, some yeast, a good amount of florals, and a light bready note. Finishes clean and creamy with a light floral bitterness. Medium length aftertaste following a medium-light, soft body and a creamy, medium carbonation. Overall, the aroma wasn’t very good, but the flavor had a nice creaminess and floral bitterness without any of the off-flavors showing up. Not bad.

Draught at Szimpla Kert in Budapest. Incredible to read it’s a lager! it’s seems an IPA, sure I wouldn’t have said it’s a bottom fermentation beer! Hazy yellow colour, with a big white head. Very fruity aroma, citrus and coriander. Taste is very bitter, nice herbal notes, and again citrus. It starts sweet, then finishes quite dry. Wow, that’s a nice beer! Maybe the best hungarian beer till now, in my opinion, it was very pleasant and drinkable.

Unfiltered, hazy, light orange colour, like weizen, big white head, fizzy. Unpasteurized lager.
Taste and palate is very herbal and full of hops, mild bitter citrus shells, it is easily drinkable, higher alcohol content, but very noticeable. Medium bodied and carbonated.
Pleasure! A good Hungarian beer.

Bottle / on -tap - Unfiltered hazy, light golden coloured beer with a thin, white head. The aroma is fruity and hoppy (Magnum and Spalt!?). Herbal taste along with a sweet malt base. Leave a really awesome bitterness in your mouth. Currently the best bottom fermented here in Hungary.

On tap at Spiler and Szimpla Kert, Budapest. Cloudy and golden colour, large foam. strong and bitter smell. Taste and palate is very herbal and full of hops. Bitter and the finishing taste is more citrus hoppy. As I like aromatic hops this beer is a very nice beer and one of the best Hungarian beers.

Csapon, Cheers pub, Budapest, Veres Pálné utca 4. Egy fantasztikus ötletből született, "műfaji határokat" átlépő sörkülönlegesség (’HopLager’), egy megunhatatlan, erősen komlós ivósör. (Sajnos a téli változata már kevésbé sikerült.)

Very drinkable beer. I fell in love with it. While in Hungary, I went every night to the Szimpla bar in Budapest where they have it.
