2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 FatPhil (5965) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - JAN 9, 2011
Tap (Erasmus, Bruges) 2009 edition, drunk 2011-01
5 Slightly sour candle-waxy aroma, a touch burnt.
3 Reddy brown, muddy, lots of sinky bits (but allegedly not the bottom of the keg)
5 Slightly sour retronasals and taste. Some mange-tous pulsy vegetables
2 Full, but tongue-scapingly sticky. Acidity makes the carbonation a bit aggressive. Finish gives hint to roasty coffee, but I didn’t get it in the taste.
10 Clearly not on top form. Just got a French shrug from the staff when we asked if it was end of keg. He mentioned coffee, we mentioned sour. He just said that each one is different. He wasn’t even prepared to pull a sample for himself and see. Not impressed. Should rerate a fresher one.

Drank on day 1 of the 2010 Mondial de la Bière. Dark brown silty, no head. Spicy sweet aroma of malt, a bit of vegetable. Flavor very vegetal, not verry malty, pretty bad boiled vegetable aftertaste. This is not a merry Christmas!
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 JorisPPattyn (6426) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - JUN 5, 2010
Towering huge cream-beige head, dense, slowly disappearing over near-black beer. Powerful dark malts aromas, with green leaves, herbs, cypress. Very dry-smoky flavour, ashes, dusty, with just a bit malty sweetness in the finish. Some liquorice. Medium to well-bodied, grist slickness, discreet alcohol. Nose pure Walloon dark ale, taste is much more (sweetish) stout-like, if more perfumed than most. Easily the best from De Vlier so far.

@ Kerstbierfestival Essen (B). A dark bruin colored beer, with a thick beige head. The aroma of caramel, dark fruits, some sweet. The taste is sparkling, a little chocolate, get’s on stronger. There are fruits with notes of bitter. The aftertaste is some bitter with a little sweet.
