3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 spitfire9703 (6) - Kalamazoo, USA - MAY 16, 2008 does not count
Very smooth, many friends from school, Michigan Tech, say it is like Guinness but way better. Dark, almost black color is almost misleading as it is not very heavy. Good flavors and almost no bitterness.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 bigtaster (293) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - JUL 8, 2008
On tap at bar. Very smoky aroma and flavor. Full bodied jet black. Nice surprise.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - AUG 31, 2006
5 oz draught sample at the brewpub, late July 2006. Huge thick speckles of lace, a dark tan head atop the jet, thick body...doesn’t appear to be on nitro.....touches of butter alas but the creamy latte tones soon help to forgive this problem, and a light bitter chocolate waft increases the anticipation....on the tongue it’s blue/blackberry fruitiness, light chocolate, with little roastiness and a thin, watery finish....mixed, very mixed, like most of the beers here its problematic but has potential.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 awaisanen (1312) - Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, USA - JAN 2, 2006
Dark black beer with a creamy head that appears to be modeled after guiness. Chocolate and coffee aromas dominate and a hint of nutty malts come through on the palate. Pleasing overall, and much better than most bulk cream stouts purchased from the store.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 robertsreality (2460) - Minnesota, USA - APR 12, 2005
Dark Dark Brown with Bubbly Ring. Rich Malt Aroma. Subtle.. Malt and Coffee Roasts. A Bit Watery Overall and Lacks a Good Potency For Those Flavors. Still a Drinkable Stout.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 badgerben (4116) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - APR 7, 2005
The last of the batch of growlers from CharlesDarwin. Black color with no head. Unfortunately, I don’t think this one survived the trip. The aroma and taste were utterly and completely blank. Someday I hope to try it again, but otherwise, it’s just an inoffensive black beer.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 auerbrau (2668) - Peace Dale, Rhode Island, USA - JAN 21, 2005
UPDATED: AUG 8, 2006 Original rate Jan 21, 2005. Pitch black pour with a glowing red glint, with copious lasting light brown head. Lacing sheets the pint. Toasty chocolate, coffee, molasses and alcohol aromas, which could be stronger. The flavors are of bourbon fudge, roasted peppers and chicory. Nutty, with hazle and walnuts. Dry cacao finish with smooth swallow. Re-rate August 8, 2006. Multiple subsequent rerates of this beer leave it shallow and vapid. The three pints I had last night gave me a complete sense of the beer. Batch variability is all over the place. This batch had heavy vegetal tannins, which I suspected were the cause of either too long or too hot of a mash. The nitro-tap left no carbonation. And the coffee or chocolate flavors were non-existant. Just a mellow light sugary toast, replete with plants. I can only give this beer point for being sessionable.
