Don't let its looks deceive you. Though it may resemble a porter or a stout, this is a light bodied ale with a pleasant hint of molasses. Don't be afraid of the dark.

Pours a dark ruby with a tall khaki head that leaves a thick foamy lacing. Nose involves coffee, smoked ham, toasted malt, and dark sugar. Fairly sweet, somewhat bitter. Lighter toward watery, oily, frothy, with a lengthy smoky finish. Not a bad brew, a bit strange and unexpected at first sip without reading the description. Sort of a session smoke beer, which is a great idea, though I don’t think everything came together seamlessly here.

Very watery leads to little flavor. Non-offensive but not noteworthy either. B-L-A-H.

Draft. Black/brown with thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and grain. Light body, roasted malts, and some sweetness. Not much else going on but decent.

Black with off white head and decent lacing. Mild roast, mild grain and mild dark berry aroma. Medium bodied, lite roast notes, but fairly bland. Watery, but drinkable swartzbier, and no hop bitter notes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

pours a cola brown with a nice beige head. Aroma is very malty. Smooth creamy mouth feel. Taste is malty with a small hop presence. Finishes slightly sweet. Good beer!

Very very nice black pour from a can, impressive mild roasty aroma too!. Big head, alabaster. First taste makes me wonder why this is called a widowmaker, its simply a kind and gentle well behaved dark beer. Really has manners and its really enjoyable, I’m liking this brew. Its so nifty to finally have a beer over 5% that is not totally in yer face. Yes, one of the better dark beers I’ve had for a while. During the session, the aroma gets a little more metallic and the co2 goes just a tad flat but overall this was a good beer experience.

can. Near black with one finger head. Lots of roasted malt in this one. Smooth and surprisingly light bodied.

Reviewed from notes. Consumed June 2013. The appearance had a jet black body with a one finger foamy off white head that hangs around for a good two minutes before slowly dieing, clingy lacing. The smell had chocolate malts, roasty, and coffee-like flavoring. The taste was mainly sweet and roasty through the chocolates and malts, but the coffee flavorings help balance a bit. The palate was about a light to medium, sessionable, smooth and creamy. Overall, I do like this beer, but I don’t think its an American Black Ale - too roasty and bitter coffee with chocolate and no hops that makes me think its more of a Porter or perhaps Stout, but I would have this again.
