Don't let its looks deceive you. Though it may resemble a porter or a stout, this is a light bodied ale with a pleasant hint of molasses. Don't be afraid of the dark.

Just plain good. Say ya to da U.P., eh? Dark, yet light bodied. Malty flavor. Great beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very very nice black pour from a can, impressive mild roasty aroma too!. Big head, alabaster. First taste makes me wonder why this is called a widowmaker, its simply a kind and gentle well behaved dark beer. Really has manners and its really enjoyable, Iím liking this brew. Its so nifty to finally have a beer over 5% that is not totally in yer face. Yes, one of the better dark beers Iíve had for a while. During the session, the aroma gets a little more metallic and the co2 goes just a tad flat but overall this was a good beer experience.

can. Near black with one finger head. Lots of roasted malt in this one. Smooth and surprisingly light bodied.

Reviewed from notes. Consumed June 2013. The appearance had a jet black body with a one finger foamy off white head that hangs around for a good two minutes before slowly dieing, clingy lacing. The smell had chocolate malts, roasty, and coffee-like flavoring. The taste was mainly sweet and roasty through the chocolates and malts, but the coffee flavorings help balance a bit. The palate was about a light to medium, sessionable, smooth and creamy. Overall, I do like this beer, but I donít think its an American Black Ale - too roasty and bitter coffee with chocolate and no hops that makes me think its more of a Porter or perhaps Stout, but I would have this again.

Rated on 10-01-2010. This canned beer pours a medium sized very fizzy tan head that quickly dissipates, mostly opaque black body, lively, fast rising carbonation, and one ring of lacing. The aroma is roasted malt as is the flavor The palate is tangy and this beer is light-medium bodied. This beer lacks character and is very bland tasting. This is a beer I do not recommend.

On draft at Danís on January 24. The pour is a darker brown, with a lot of ruby around the edges. There is no head to be found, and as such, no lace exists. The aroma s really light. There is a little bit of maltiness present, but itís really thin. The taste is quite dull. Some malts are detected, but there isnít anything else. The mouth feel is extraordinarily thin and watery, with flavors not hanging out at all.

On tap at The Looking Glass, pours black with an off white head, the aroma is pretty meh, a little bit of roast and chocolate, but thatís stretching, the flavor is sweet with some caramel and malt in the finish, meh.

FROM NOTES: July 11, í12 Poured from a 12 ounce can into a pint glass. A: Very malty with distinct sweet bread notes. It has an interesting slightly tart cherry sort of acidity that melds with astringent roasted malts. A: Pours a dark, dark brown with a frothy light tan head that has great lacing. In the glass, it reminds me of a porter.... T: Sweet malt, chocolate, tea with some very roasty malt flavors and hints of a tart cherry flavor. P: On the light side of medium bodied, slightly watery and a very smooth finish. O: Not a great Black Ale, but not a terrible one. Worth the try, but I wonít kill to get it.
