COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Don't let its looks deceive you. Though it may resemble a porter or a stout, this is a light bodied ale with a pleasant hint of molasses. Don't be afraid of the dark.

From notes. First reviewed 12/3/2011. Served on tap in a pint glass at Lockhart’s BBQ. The beer is a dark brown color with a ruby tint in the edges. A small off-white film is all that exists for a head. Light roasted malts, slightly bitter with some caramel sweetness. The aroma is very light. The flavor is mellow roasted malt with some milky sweet chocolate. Metallic and a bit of citrus toward the end. Fairly flat flavor with not much hop presence at the end. This has crisp carbonation but a mild flavor, resulting in a watery sensation. The body is on the light side. I ordered this because I am a fan of American Black Ales, but this barely qualifies for the category. It tastes like a boring over-carbonated porter or something.

Can. Dark brown, light thin head. Mild roasty aroma. Not much taste and with a light finish. Palate is pretty thin.

Draft @ Lockhart’s BBQ. Advertised as a Black Ale. Really nothing special here, but nothign terrible here. I’ve just had a lot better beers in this category.

12 oz can. Pours black with deep red highlights and a light tan head. Mineral aroma with traces of dark fruit or brown sugar. Very light flavor, brown sugar and dark fruit are sensed first, but mostly I get toasted biscuit. Bits of apple flavors. Okay, but pretty light.

Not a great beer, no hops or bitterness, in fact not a great flavour at all, an okay beer, but wouldn’t push to the bar for one!

Nice color, so so aroma. Very little head, though there appeared to be plenty of carbonation. Some yeast sediment throughout the beer. Just a little too sweet even for a schwarzbier.

12 oz. can, thanks to Alex. Nearly opaque ebony with a lasting disc of creamy foam above. Nose is grain, molasses, cocoa, and spicy dry grass. Flavor is similar mix with some spicy, herbal hops and a bit of smoke and ash as well. Soft carbonation and a nice balance in this light-medium bodied brew. Nice session ale.

Can. Pours a deep, nearly opaque black with a thin, tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, cereal, and a little smoke. Flavor is pretty much in step with the aroma, but with an additional, slightly cloying sweetness. Plenty of roasted malt, not much in the way of bitterness to balance it out. Too sweet, but otherwise a decent enough schwarzbier.

Very light for the style. Dark color, little head, and light in alcohol. Lacked any malty or hoppy flavors. Good mouth feel and with low octane, easy to drink as a session beer. Like the can, art and writing.

Opaque black color, with modest head and very thin body. Little aroma. Sweet molasses taste. No hops.
