This beer arrives annually to Ottawa in mid January and is gone before spring arrives. The style is Cascadian Dark Ale, also known as a Black IPA or an American Black Ale. The pitch black colour introduces you to roasted malt avours, but with a major hop presence you would expect from an IPA. At 6.4% and 76 IBUís, you can appreciate this beer being described as bitter, strong and black. What the heck is a Wuchak? Wuchak is a term used by First Nations People and over time, wuchak was slowly transformed into the term - woodchuck. When you drive around Ottawa, you will often notice these groundhogs (aka woodchucks) popping up out of their burrows along the Queensway and the Hunt Club parkway.

A thin tan head on a dark body with a soft chocolate and cream nose. The citrus hops lead the profile and mix well with the chocolate and mild coffee elements. It has a solid body but the taste profile could have more depth to it. There is a touch of extra sweetness this time around, it seems.

Dark body, tan head, some lace. Roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate with inviting hop presents (sic). Rich, bitter forefront yielding to smooth, balanced aftertaste. Slightly oily in mouth with a nip of carbonation.

473 ml can from LCBO. Pours a dark brown colour with orangey edges and modest-sized light tan head. Aroma is earthy and roasty with some light citric notes. Flavour is roasty with coffee and cocoa along with a solid earthy and slightly piney/citric bitterness. Medium plus body. Solid.

Big tan head, lots of lacing. Very dark brown / black colour. Aroma of roast, chocolate, searching for hops but coming up short, somewhat odd pork aroma. Matching flavours, earthy hops, light mint, spice and pine. Slight astringency (most likely from the roast malts and possibly hops). Medium mouthfeel, slightly sweet finish balanced with a lingering bitterness. Light medicinal / aspirin aftertaste.

Black IPA that does not have the same burnt taste as most black IPAs. Tasty but fades out quickly on the back end.

Jet black, small beige head. Very nice coffe, roasty malt aroma, with some very nice pine resin hops. The mouthh feel is very soft, as well as the carb. A very nice balance between a porter and a resinous ipa.

Iím gonna guess that theyíve changed the recipe for this beer, because the older reviews below donít jive with the beer I tasted. Pour is jet black with a fat finger of light brown cap. Great retention, nice lacing, this stuff is awful pretty. Nose is a nice chocolatey/toasted grain malt with tons of floral/citrus/pine hops. On the tongue itís a sweet dark caramel malt, lots of chocolate, toasted grain, dark chocolate, some coffee, citrus, pine and flowers. Body is medium, texture is creamy, slightly oily, average(+) carbonation, and a really nice dry, bitter, resinous finish with lingering chocolate notes. If they keep producing the beer I tasted I expect the average score is gonna go up. Top notch stuff, IMHO.

On tap at BBB (Ottawa, ON). Pours a black body with brownish glints and a lasting off-white foamy head. Decent malty/hoppy aroma with chocolate and subtle roasty hints. Its sharp hoppy taste carries malty and roasted coffee notes. Ends with a good bitter/roasty finish. Enjoyable.
