a half hearted attempt from A-B, might be a good compared with other mass marketed brews, but is utterly disappointing compared to other fully flavored brews

Do yourself a favor and grab a Leinenkugel’s Red. I am SO biased against A-B products, and with good reason. You touch a hot burner enough times, you learn to stay away.

A-B’s take on an Irish style red falls far short of the mark. Heavy without body, slightly sweet without malt. Somewhat tangy without hops balance. Bland beer with red food coloring.

Drinkable! It was the best beer available at the bowling alley last night. Would not try it anywhere else!

Sadly, A-B’s intention to sucker Irish Americans like myself worked and I included a very cheap six of this in a recent party purchase. I was at first pleasantly surprised - there was some bright nuttiness initially. Unfortunately, it dissolved into a stagnant slimy wash.

Not bad considering where it comes from

Why do the big boys bother? This is the A-B version of Killian’s, as both the name and color attest. Not as rich or syrupy as Killian’s, but has an irritating bitterness that I am assuming is not from the hops. The maltiness that should offset this is missing in this one. Probably better from the tap, but I’m not taking any chances.

I just tried this again and had to update my rating... I enjoyed the flavor more this time. More malty than I expected. I gave it another try because a local store had it on sale for $6.50 a case! I’ll put it up there with Amber Bock as the best A-B products. Still, that ain’t saying much.
