Bottle from Brusin’ Ales, Asheville. Pours a clear red amber with a thin beige ring of a head. Lots of caramel malts in the nose, mostly old and slightly oxidized. Thin to medium body, more of those malts that are too syruppy and take on a grassy astringent bitter finish that dries out from the alcohol. Other than that finish and a hint of flavor, the alcohol is pretty well hidden. This is probably best guaranteed fresh on tap. Not that great at this point.

Originally reviewed: 2/9/09. Wow! I was really impressed with this beer. Pours a deep orange/gold with a nice milkshake-like frothy head on top. This retained perfectly and left nice sticky globs along the glass edge as well as perfect sip rings. Smelled of piney hops, and deep sour citrus. Great scent. I love the fruity bitterness on this one. It’s not so overpowering that it’ll knock you down, but it is satisfying as all get out. Wonderfully balanced, as I can also taste the malty sweetness coming through. Mouthfeel was full and crisp. Excellent. This one was an easy drinker for sure, and though the ABV is higher, I wanted another and another. Great brew. Recommend.

On Draft at the fridge, Lancaster. Much higher ABV and darker than most pale ales, but neither unusual attribute does much to improve things, as the hop presence is diminished by the malt backbone - a decent pale ale, but much better ones out there.

Pours dark amber -- not exactly "pale"! Light citrus and pine aroma. Taste is more malt than hops, just a lightly bitter finish. Pretty okay.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle. It pours a hazy, light amber color with a dense, off-white head. The nose has a little pine and pale malt. The favor has a nice mix of hops and malt with notes of pine resin and a slight nuttiness. Medium bodied with average carbonation. A pretty average pale ale.

Draft. Not very pale. Aroma of raw dough. Taste of sweet caramel at the start and a bitter finish.

Pour is golden with a nice head. Darker than most pale ales. This is a pretty high ABV for a APA though. Malty nose. Smells of malts and grains. There are some earthy hops in there but definitely in the background. Some spice as well. The taste is malty and grainy. The texture is a bit gritty and grainy as well. There’s some hop bitterness. Some earth and spice, but it just doesn’t come together for me. It’s heavy and heavy handed with the malt profile. The beer said best by April of next year I think. So while the beer was fresh, it didn’t taste fresh.

Clear copper color with an off-white head that vanishes quickly. Light aroma of pine and caramel. Likewise, flavor is minimal-some caramel and a touch of pine. Creamy mouth feel is this beer’s best characteristic. Disappointing.

Pours brownish amber with a light tan head that lingered a little. A subtle, brief aroma of malts and maple syrup with pine and citrus. Medium bodied, aggressively carbonated and has full, smooth mouthfeel. Flavor starts with sweet malt, maple syrup and biscuits and is well balanced w/ battering hops. Overall, a good brew though a bit sweet for the style.

poured a darker amber color with mild head and lacing. has a very sweet smell. i agree with the maple character. more taste of malt and a roasted flavor than hoppy. slight alcohol burn at the finish. not a very memorable beer

Copper with very little head and lots of lacing. I got light pina aroma with more sweetness (maple?) as it warmed. Tasted a little smoked to me then turning to a pretty decent hop. Hard on roof of mouth, softer on tongue.
