1996 & 1997 vintage side-by-side tasting @ Shrewsbury Beer Share, Jan 15, many thanks Mike for these rare gems! Both pour clear gold with decent head. 1996 has a dusty cobweb taste, rather musty and past it’s best. The 1997 seemed to retain a good caramel fruitiness and tasted really rather special. An excellent tasting, shame there wasn’t more to savour!.

Two shared bottles: 1996 and 1997. Both were superb! Brought to the January bottle share meeting in Shrewsbury by Mike. Broached between five of us on 12th January 2015. Clear, mid-gold with white heads the beers looked good. Fairly sweet with plum and spicy notes. Slight ’musty and dusty’ feel to the brews, but both bottles were covered in cobwebs, so maybe they gave off some of the esters I picked up on? The 1997 version seems a little darker, stronger and fruitier, however it was a joy to drink both of them. Lovely surprise to have a chance to try these ’classic’ beers from the late 19 hundreds. ’98 version. Enjoyed from bottle as part of Delilah’s winter beer tasting in Chicago, IL. Excited to have tried this as the brewery has been closed for a decade now. Appearance is a very cloudy, murky brown with no head and an overabundant amount of yeast sediment at the bottom of my glass. Aroma of sweetness, malt, and a bit of spice. Taste was pretty thick, sweet with a presence of raisins, along with spice and caramel malt. Surprised that this was almost 15 years old. Kept well over the years.

330 ml bottle, 1995. Murky brown color, thin tan head. Aroma of brown bread and light spce. Taste is sweet and spiced. Decent.

Date: 3/7/2010 Source:Other Richmond Beer Dig. Dark fruits and caramelized sugar in aroma. Cloudy medium brown with little head. Lots of fruitiness and some spicy yeast character. Finish is sweet and perfumy with some warming.

Bottle from 1999 at the Richmond Beer Dig on 03/07/2010. Slightly hazy caramel amber body with a small off-white head. Sweet earthy, caramel and oxidized aroma. Big sugary caramel and earthy flavor. Medium full body with low carbonation.

vintage 99 at the richmond beer dig spring 2010. oxidized and flat. sweet and earthy, like mushrooms. definitely past it’s prime. kinda like a flat j w lees.

1997 vintage. a 13 year old bottle was provided by a flossmoor station mug clubber at a mug clubbing. dark, cloudy brown, no head, not lacy. nose of dried and sweet fruit, spice. flavor is sweet fruit, apples, perhaps a hint of raison and spice. medium bodied, sweetish finish. alcohol is well hidden, and the beer really held up surprisingly well over the years.

1999 Bottle Hazy brown in colour. Fruity aroma with Christmas cake, spice and marzipan. Malty, sweet and fruity taste with Christmas cake and a spicy kick.
1997 Bottle - Brown in colour. Musty aroma with leather, malt and hints of dried fruit. Tangy and fruity taste with tangy Christmas cake, marzipan and a slightly warming kick in the finish.

Vintage 1997 on label, and discovered a DOB stamp of 5/9/97. Consumed 11/6/09. 12 years and 181 days later. 1 day under 12&1/2, Tada! Really bad experience with the first few bottles. Did NOT care about the yeast. Ech! With a proper pour, the last ounce splashes out some moldy black looking sediment into the sink, and the bottom of the bottle is completely opaque with residue. Can’t believe I DRANK THAT! Not even sure its safe to consume. Been settling in the stash for awhile now. Got adventurous and chilled one of these for a re rate:
Pours a clear, dark, reddish, brown amber. with minimal specs of sediment. Some bubbles from the pour leave a tan ring, but no real head to speak of. Smells of alcohol. Touch of Bacardi rum or a whiskey drink. With caramel, cinnamon apple, chocolate covered raisins, toffee, toasty nuttiness, and still a hint of Christmas spice in here somewhere on the nose. Palate is oily, caught between thin, heavy and flat. Mouth follows up with dusty cardboard, boozy rum, caramel, wine like fruit notes, and the ghost of a dry spice finish. Finishes up quite alcoholic. With a terrible musty linger. I am super surprised that I enjoyed this as much as I did, as it disgusted me initially. Held up fair, for sitting on a store shelf.
