cathcacr (519), Portland, Oregon, USA Feb 1, 2007 Heavy on roasty cocoa aroma. Massive head that looks like those beer commercials with the head protuding (huh huh, huh huh huh) 3/4 inch above the top of my wide conical. Huh huh huh, huh huh huh huh huh.
Okay, I’ll stop there.
boboski (1095), USA Dec 28, 2006 2005. Purchased at Bello Vino, Ann Arbor, MI. Pours dark reddish brown, diminutive cream colored head. Nose is all malt with raisins, touch of alcohol, cashews, toffee and caramel. Taste is more of the same, but very focused as the flavors are very well melded together. Full bodied, palate was a little oily but nonetheless pleasurable from start to finish. I found this to be a very exciting, rich and well made dopplebock. Was the hit of a bock tasting several months after its purchase. Nice one. OldGrowth (1279), Cary, North Carolina, USA Dec 22, 2006 Bottle, from trade with walleye. Ok aroma, sweet. Soy, caramel, raisin/grape. plum. Little cardboard/paper thing too. Clean orangy dark brown color, massive head, half the glass on first pour, that slowly faded to one of those dead foam covers. Malty flavor, mainly a soyish grape thing. I get a little nuttiness I didn’t get in the aroma. Medium body, lite creamy mouthfeel, dry bitter finish. Eh, doesn’t do much for me. Seemed weak for the style. Oh well. Thanks walleye. AlchemistZ (493), Richmond, Virginia, USA Nov 5, 2006 Opaque, dark brown, almost black, with a voluminous, brown head from an intense carbonation. Aroma has a very hard water impresssion with some malty notes underneath that is proper for style with lots of milk and toffee and some bubblegummy richness. Flavor is quite odd and not very pleasant. I assumed the overcarbonation would ruin the palate with all of that extra carbonic acid does not seem to phase this one. That said, I have lots of trouble with the interpretations of beer styles from this brewery and its ’house character.’ There is something about almost every beer they produce that turns me away. This beer does not even fall into the bock or double bock category except for maybe alcoholic strength. demitriustown (589), Macomb, Michigan, USA Jul 17, 2006 12 oz bottle: A dark brown pour with a thick carbonated tan head. Aroma is malty, roasted coffee, alcohol, nice hop note, and a slight caramel scent. Taste consists of malts, chocolate, hops, slight coffee notes, and quite smooth. Palate is flat and everso slightly bitter. Overall, I liked this Doppelbock from Pontiac. Best to get it fresh.
