2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle courtesy of Mr_Kimchee: Poured a medium clear brown color beer with a small foamy off-white head with OK retention. Aroma of light roasted malt is a bit boring. Taste has a portion of banana malt, which is interesting, but it also hides some weird dry malt, which don’t match-up very well with the rest of the beer. Body is light and carbonation is about average. Not sure this is a beer I would seek again.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Copper colour, almost no head-but what is-thin tan. Aroma of caramel, light malt and metal. Medium-bodied; Somewhat spicey taste with caramel and malt most prevalent. Overall, decent-better than I was expecting, a bit more than a 'palate cleanser'! I had this bottle at the Winter Party at Oakes' place in Toronto, Canada on 05-December-2003.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Looks like an Irish Ale. Red and thin looking. Nice head and caramel lacing. Light fruit aroma giving way to caramel and toffee as it warms. Decent pint. Caramel taste with a trace of spice that is hard to pin down that teases through the finish. Slighty thicker body but reminiscent of Big Rock’s Trad or McNally. Props to Tupalev.

on tap at C’est what beer festival, very similar to the normal King Dark, but a bit more bodied, and a tad more malty, all in all, a nice brew

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
341 ml bottle in a 6-pack from LCBO, served cold in a Scotch Irish taster glass.
App.: Deep clear mahogany with a so-so tan head.
Aroma: Nutty dark malts, minimal fruitiness, slightly spicy with some stern brown sugar notes, dark bread crust, hints of caramel as it warms.
Palate: Medium body, moderate to full effervescence.
Flav.: Dark bready malts, nuttiness, some light molasses and some brown sugar notes, a little fruitier than the nose, a touch of licorice, quite nice; dry with a touch of bitterness and a mineral with slight malts finish.
Not mind-blowing, but competent.

Bottle. Amber colour, small thin head. Slightly fruity aroma, but nothing too noticeable. Thin malty character, nicely balanced with a mild hoppy taste. Crisp. Was expecting nothing, so this was a nice surprise. Looking forward to trying the pilsner

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JAN 7, 2008 RE-RATE: Bottle from OCB media package. When I originally rated this 4+ years ago, I knew S.F.A. about dunkels, so it deserved a re-rate. Pours a nice caramel-amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is malty, with notes of coffee and bread, and a grassy hops. Medium mouthfeel. Nutty malt flavour with hints of coffee and toffee, and a moderately hopped finish. A very good dunkel - especially when it’s fresh. I’m glad I’ve grown to appreciate this style much more than I used to!
ORIGINAL RATING (Nov/03): Reddish-orange colour that seems a bit on the light side for a "dark" lager. Mild aroma of caramel & malt, which carries through to the flavour. Body is crisp, and the finish is slightly bitter & hoppy. It’s OK, but definately not as good as the Pilsner. [5/2/6/3/10 - 2.6]
