Authentic Munich Dunkel Style Lager 4.8% alc./vol. King Brewery's newest addition is this authentic Munich-style Dark Lager. Using only the finest imported Dark Munich Malt and Noble German Hops, combined with brewing in our authentic German decoction brewhouse, gives this beer King's trademark "true to style" aroma and flavour. This delicious beer is red-brown in colour, with a thick tan coloured head. The palate is rich and full, delivering a clean bready taste with a hint of toasted chocolate, while sporting elegant lace lines to the bottom of your glass. This unique Dark Lager is complex yet clean. Enjoy it with all European continental style foods and cheeses, or just as a well deserved cold one. Extremely flavourful, balanced and deliciously refreshing, our Dark Lager has to be tasted to be appreciated!

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2008 RE-RATE: Bottle from OCB media package. When I originally rated this 4+ years ago, I knew S.F.A. about dunkels, so it deserved a re-rate. Pours a nice caramel-amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is malty, with notes of coffee and bread, and a grassy hops. Medium mouthfeel. Nutty malt flavour with hints of coffee and toffee, and a moderately hopped finish. A very good dunkel - especially when it’s fresh. I’m glad I’ve grown to appreciate this style much more than I used to!

ORIGINAL RATING (Nov/03): Reddish-orange colour that seems a bit on the light side for a "dark" lager. Mild aroma of caramel & malt, which carries through to the flavour. Body is crisp, and the finish is slightly bitter & hoppy. It’s OK, but definately not as good as the Pilsner. [5/2/6/3/10 - 2.6]

341ml brown bottle. Reddish lager, head is small and tan. Fresh malty aroma. Roasted malt taste, some decent hopiness behind it. Rather carbonated.

341 ml bottle from Beer Store. Pours a dark amber with small white head. Malty aroma with toffee and a light roastiness. Nice flavour with nuttiness, coffee, toffee and a pleasant, slightly bitter finish. The more I had of this, the more I liked it.

The best of the King three kings pack. Pours a dark brown with a small brown top. Aroma is mostly roasted malts with a small hint of hop. Taste is a little smokey, a little roasty with a small hop bite. Solid beer but fairly pedestrian.

Purchased in Toronto at a LCBO. Part 2 of 3 dark brown beer that are tested. This one pours a clear brown colour, and looks quite close to the Black Oak Nut Brown Ale I just had. The only difference is that the lacing is slightly thinner on this one and the retention does not last as long. The nose is of dark fruits, yeast and mild dark malts. Watery carbonated mouthfeel with very light stickiness. The taste is pretty mild, with some roasted malts and a light sweetness in the finish. Not a bad product, but just laking punchiness.

341ml bottle from <a href=http://www.thebeerstore.ca/ target=blank>The Beer Store in Peterborough, Ontario. Deep rust in colour, thin dissipating tan head, no lacing. The aroma is of caramel and cold coffee, quite malts, sugary. The flavour is lightly sweet and sticky, lots of caramel, some chocolate. Lightly bitter mouthfeel, medium body, mild carbonation. Finishes a bit thin, lightly sweet. The finish kind of lost my attention, all this build up and then nothing.

draught at C’est What. mahogany with a tiny off-white head. plum and raisin are evident in the aroma. slightly acidic, moderate carbonation. sweet malt flavour is prominent. meh, it’s decent but overall fairly mediocre and uninteresting. I’d much rather have their pilsner.

6 pack LCBO purchase- Dark crimson with brownish hues. Foamy heady off white fluff sits above. Some pretty lacing accompanies. Nose is filled with caramel malts, followed by an earthy breadiness. Mouth is full of sweet malt and raisin bread. Bitterness to follow. Slight acidity leaves me docking a few points for taste and overall. Generally well balanced and well made. King does it again!
