3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 probstblueribbon (2378) - Nepean, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 21, 2007
341 mL bottle from brewery, served cold in a tulip glass.
App.: Clear, deep golden, with a smallish off-white head (foamy).
Aroma: Strong cereal/grain, some herbaceous, peppery hops; hints of sweeter malts – caramel and toffee. Very much a Pilsner aroma, especially cold.
Palate: Medium bodied, somewhat syrupy, medium carbonation.
Flav.: More bock-like here: some sweet and roasted malts, a hint of dark dried fruit; a bit of the floral/peppery hops; finishes fairly dry with moderate bitterness and a bit of burnt sugar.
Certainly interesting, but not mind-blowing.

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2010 >>>>> ** NEW RATING *** >>>> Rich pale matly tones and fruit, lemon, good lager edge, honest earthy green hops, notable alcohol is warming and pleasant, aroma is subdued with light sweetness alcohol and yeast, has a great body and needs to be sipped, it has gotten a lot better perhaps >>> OLD VERSION RATING >>>> DRAUGHT, BEERBISTRO. Noble hops crown this well-crafted light bock beer from King. The malt flavorings lack definition or else they ’fight’ the hopping. Overall a bit jumbled tasting and tedious to sip on. Me like King Dark. Me like simple. 7/3/6/2/9 = 2.7

[245-20070329] Tap @ Volo (Toronto, ON). Toasty grains and hops aroma with medium alcohol. Clear, deep golden yellow body with average rising small bubbles and a medium-lasting foamy white head. Flavour is still grainy hops with a bitter aftertaste. Medium body is pretty rough. OK togetherness but overly gravelly. Enh.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 shintriad (700) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - APR 18, 2007
Not sure it accomplishes the uniqueness it claims, but it is a good beer. Very light in colour, grainy, some noble hops in the nose but it’s mostly sweet and a bit of that alcohol bite. A cool experiment that didn’t go awry.

Good, nice bock without too much alcoholic tatse. I like the amber colour and good foam. MAlty but not too bitter though.

UPDATED: APR 21, 2007 341ml Bottle fromn the Brewery: Here’s my story - I visited the brewery, told them I had it at Volo. They weren’t happy, it was well out of date and not to be drank. Promised they’d have some the end of March. And so I returned, and indeed got some. It is much better fresh and new, and it truly grows on you. Get at least 12, the last six will be better than the first. But enjoy them quickly, like most King products; like teen stars they don’t age well. Aroma is much the same - malty, grainy, and present alcohol. The flavour is vastly improved. Sweet, nutty, grainy, hints of bubblegum and caramel in the aftertaste. The entire thing is covered in a swath of booze that reminds you you’re drinking a strong beer. Simple grassy aftertaste, leaves you wanting more. Nice work!

Original Rating 07/01/04: 6/4/6/3/13 341ml Bottle @ Volo: I almost wet myself with excitement when I found this bottle in the Volo fridges last night. As a fan of the brewery I had sadly come to terms with the fact I’d never taste it, so t’was a good night. Pours golden in colour, a hue or two darker than their Pils, with a good sized white foam head offering great lacing and retention. Aroma is sweet with malts, quite grainy, and a good amount of present alcohol. The taste is very strong, grainy, elements of straw, sweet from the malts with heavy alcohol and generous portion of (I think) Saaz hops. I would say my least favourite of the King offerings by far, but interesting for what it was.

Slightly hazy yellow-amber w/ thin ring of frothy white foam. Aroma of biscuity pale malts & herbal, grassy hops. Soft, somewhat grainy feel. Flavour is crisp, malty & decently bitter.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2007 March 2007. Draft @ Volo. Bright golden yellow with a small white head. Big grassy, grainy aroma with funky noble hops. Flavour is similar, lots of grains and sweet pale malt. Moderate hoppy bitterness and grassy notes, straw. Average palate. Really did not care for this, I think largely because of the hop character which is just really not to my liking. If these kinds of hops are for you, then I expect you will like this more than I did. 6/3/6/3/12 - 3.0

May 2006. Bottle @ Volo. Crisp yellow body with a small bubbly white head. Sweet grainy aroma. Strong fusel (?) alcohol flavours not unlike some of the malt liquor from a few nights ago but without the alcohol burn. Sweet pale malt with very dry slightly alcoholic, herbal hop finish. Average palate. Pretty rough at times, it lacks the depth of flavour to cover the rough edges. Comparable to something like Holsten Maibock? 6/3/6/3/12 - 3.0
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Sammy (7034) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - APR 3, 2006
on-tap at Volo. More head than body. Body light yellow. Very creamy head of lace. Sticky and tasty. Both sweet and Drying finish. Hops are there for some significant bitterness and then malted away. Interesting and worth trying again. Lagerish medium mouthfeel.
