2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Silphium (2718) - East Lansing, USA - OCT 17, 2006
Murky orange-brown body, thin off-white head. Earthy aroma, bready, with dull caramels. Bready body, subdued sweetness, with grassy, earthy hops, though faded. Dull, lifeless, and boring. Not worth the calories, so the rest will be greeted with pipe while I pour a Nosferatu.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 DarkElf (2961) - La Jolla, California, USA - MAR 5, 2006
(12 oz bottle: Obtained 21-Feb-06 in trade with Pailhead, thanks Kevin!) The red ox on the label is lickin’ his chops over something; could it be the beer? The caramely, bready and moderately sweet nose is pleasant enough I suppose, but isn’t reeling me in. This beer tastes bready and sweet, somewhat caramely, yet a bit tart and sour too, and a moderate butteriness emerges to join in the bready finish, distracting to be sure, but not deadly. Hops bitterness is far too meek to save the flavor. Medium bodied, lightly carbonated, but ultimately tiring on the palate. Dark amber in color and very hazy, but sporadic carbonation bubbles can be seen rushing toward the surface. The creamy, off-white head starts off looking solid but soon dissipates fully. Overall, I find this is a beer of "but"s. A few positives offset by greater negatives, and thus, this beer doesn’t even attain mediocrity, falling short of the pleasure given by the "average" microbrew. But the ox sure finds it tasty.

Medium amber body with a thin head. The aroma is oranges and sweet bread. The taste is dark bread and some light oranges. There is a strong finish of unbaked bread dough. A weird tasting beer.
