JPDIPSO (4865), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Mar 6, 2007 Light brown to umber color. Moderate ecru colored head. Caramel, with just a hint of dark fruit in the nose. Quite simple aromas, but certainly no objections, if any no sign of strength or depth. Pleasantly surprised by the smoothness of this. While light and a touch to "fizzy", it has a real light oily quality that I enjoy. Quite simple flavor with brown sugar and dates. Some woody "qualities" in the linger and finish along with a mild burn. Perhaps an american strong, or double brown ale. Drinkable enough, just not very interesting. RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA Jan 14, 2007 Pours a very dark brown with traces of ruby highilights around the edges. There’s a half inch tan head that settles gently to spotty cap and thick ring leaving behind a nice sheeting of lace.
Smell; roasted, almost charred smelling malts, with mild hints of raisins. After that nothing seems to really stand out at all. A bit disapointing.
Taste; even more disapointing than the smell. A little roasted malts, with some hints of dark fruits with a little bit of hops in there. Overall everything is very muted. Mouthfeel is on the thin side, and hard to drink due to a bit of chalkiness, and such a high abv. I must say that I was expecting a lot more from this one. hopscotch (5441), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jan 10, 2007 Bottle... Very dark, cloudy, ruby ale with a small, creamy, khaki head and lots of small, white floaties. Decent retention. Gobs of caramel and chocolate in the nose with a whisper of coconut. Well-balanced flavor with mellow notes of caramel and chocolate and soft, smoky phenols. Full-bodied and creamy with tingly carbonation. The finish just kind of fades away into nothingness with no trace of the rich, caramel malt left behind. Still, a quality English style brew! MrBunn (1523), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 19, 2006 Pour is very dark and fairly viscous. A bit fizzier than expected with a one finger head that more like on a cola than an old ale. Aroma is faint and sticky sweet. Molasses, toffee and some very distant prune. Flavor much more watery and sharp than I was looking for and pales in comparison to some of the more balanced old ales. Also a slight antiseptic taste in the finish is a minus. Maybe all of this could blend together under the umbrella of black licorice flavoring, but there is nothing there to support it and it simply falls apart and comes off as disjointed. That said, it’s not bad, just not what I was looking for. milewide (609), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Sep 19, 2006 Little hops but nice carmel flavor, and Guiness like color. Better than their IPA. MI2CA (1260), Noblesville, Indiana, USA Sep 18, 2006 12oz - Aroma is fresh dark malts, some roastiness and black licorice. Pours a deep brown with red tints, small thick head and good lacing. Flavor matches aroma. Palate is sticky. Not a bad ale. AlabastorJones (762), San Francisco, California, USA Aug 15, 2006 Dark brown body, no head to speak of, roasty sweet nose, sweet flavor, slightly roasty and a little spicey, nice hop bitters in the finish, the body is a little light for my palate, but the alcohol is well masked, I’m kind of shocked to see how high it is, nothing too special, but is beer, and I love beer, I think I’ll name this one Roger and raise it as my own kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 24, 2006 12 oz bottle. Pours a very dark mahogany with ruby edges under a small creamy beige head that coated the inside of my snifter like a curtain. Aroma is very malty with lots of toffee and some caramel, with some piney hops and the distinct smell of cotton candy. Flavor is a little weak, with lighter malt than the aroma would indicate. The hops are pretty toned down as well. Just light all around. Though I will say that for 9% ABV there is minimal alcohol apparency. Mouthfeel is lightbodied and thin, especially for an Old Ale. Carbonation is light and soft at least. Overall, this was just too thin, bland, and flavorless to score well as an Old Ale.
